This special issue explores open educational resources (OER) and the ways in which they can be used to support social inclusion, one of the key challenges that needs to be addressed in today's technologically rich digital environment. OER research is now moving beyond the creation of OER repositories to consideration of how they can be used effectively. Articles in this freely accessible journal address OER in higher education, the role of national and institutional policy with respect to widening participation of OER use, equity considerations for open educational resources in the local context, how OER can support science learning, and emerging issues in OER use.
