Reel Bad Arabs

This documentary is based on Jack Shaheen’s book by the same name. It addresses the depiction of Arabs in Hollywood films from the time of silent films to the twenty-first century. Shaheen explores the negative images of Arabs portrayed even in seemingly innocuous films like The Black Stallion, Back to the Future, and Disney’s Aladdin. It’s a harsh look at stereotypes, and the offensive nature of Hollywood’s traditional portrayal of Arabs. The film runs for 50 minutes, and is unlikely to hold the attention of K-12 Arabic students that long, but university students could watch it in its entirety. Younger students could benefit from watching a well-chosen segment of the film, which could spark a lively discussion of Hollywood stereotypes of all kinds.
