This unit explores the various ways information and ideas about climate change are presented through a variety of media. This includes the evaluation of social media posts, research into climate change issues, and an exploration of contemporary art and artists. This was designed and taught in an honors 9th grade English Language Arts Classroom by Dr. Tavia Quaid in response to student interest in climate change and to reinforce key information literacy skills.

Students will learn the potential costs and benefits of social media, digital consumption, and our relationship with technology as a society in the three-week lesson. This inquiry based unit of study will answer the following questions:

Essential Question: How can we use science fiction’s ability to predict the future to help humanity?

Supportive Questions 1: What predictions of future development has science fiction accurately made in the past? This can include technology, privacy, medicine, social justice, political, environmental, education, and economic.

Supportive Question 2: What predictions for future development in contemporary science fiction are positive for the future of humanity? What factors need to begin in your lifetime to make these predictions reality?

Supportive Question 3: What predictions for future development in contemporary science fiction are negative for the future of humanity? What factors need to begin in your lifetime to stop these negative outcomes?

The Middle East conflict and terrorism are issues we hear about almost daily in the news. This lesson will use video clips from WIDE ANGLE's 'Suicide Bombers' (2004), Internet sites, and primary sources to examine the roots of the Middle East conflict. The video contains interviews with young Palestinians who participated -- or intended to participate -- in suicide bombings. These young Palestinians share the personal, religious, political and emotional reasons behind their participation in these suicide operations. This lesson could be used to review information about the three major monotheistic religions and their connections to Israel, to relate post-World War II policies to the current political state of the Middle East, and/or to get students to understand the roots of the terrorism that threatens the world we live in.

As the situation in Syria worsens and the number of Syrian refugees increases, the Reimagine Syria curriculum addresses this need to understand the conflict and how this conflict has and will impact a generation of young Syrians. Through media and conflict analysis, students develop knowledge and skills to better understand the multiples ways conflict affects them and are able to address the driving question: "How can we, as youth, develop productive solutions to conflict in our communities?"

FILM: This lesson plan is designed to be used in conjunction with the film, Inheritance, which illustrates the lasting effects of the Holocaust from the perspectives of both a victim of Nazi war crimes and the child of a perpetrator. Classrooms can use this lesson to explore the responsibility of standing up to injustice and cruelty.

NOTE: This film contains sensitive content related to the genocide of Europe's Jews during World War II. In addition to verbal descriptions of abuses, the complete film includes disturbing concentration camp images, footage of the execution of a war criminal by hanging, and clips from the movie Schindler's List that contain profanity and show the shooting of a Jewish woman. Please preview before using the film in its entirety in the classroom. The clips for this lesson plan, however, are less graphic and contain primarily verbal descriptions of cruelty.

Teaching the "American War": Looking at the War in Vietnam Through Vietnamese Eyes

Too often, the Vietnam War is taught solely from American perspectives, as students examine the role of the U.S. government and military in the conflict, the war's impact on American lives, and the ways in which the war influenced subsequent domestic and foreign policy. Framing the conflict in terms that ignore the Vietnamese and their experiences, however, makes it difficult for students to fully understand the nature of the war and its impact. These primary source activities prompt students to consider the war through the eyes of the Vietnamese and are designed to complement topics that are traditionally covered from U.S. perspectives. The first activity uses speeches made by Ho Chi Minh to examine how one Vietnamese leader viewed Vietnam's struggle. In the second activity, oral history interviews with Vietnamese soldiers and civilians are used to understand the motivations of some individuals to take arms against American and South Vietnamese forces. Finally, the third activity draws on Vietnamese antiwar music to explore Vietnamese feelings towards war and make comparisons with the American antiwar movement.

 Verifying social media posts is quickly becoming a necessary endeavor in everyday life, let alone in the world of education. Social media has moved beyond a digital world which connects with friends and family and has become a quick and easy way to access news, information, and human interest stories from around the world. As this state of media has become the "new normal," especially for our younger generations, we, educators, find ourselves charged with a new task of teaching our students how to interact with and safely consume digital information.The following three modules are designed to be used as stand-alone activities or combined as one unit, in which the lessons can be taught in any order. "Who Said What?!" is a module focusing on author verification. "A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words'' is a module devoted to image verification. "Getting the Facts Straight" is a module designed to dive into information verification. Lastly, there are assessment suggestions to be utilized after completing all three modules.
