ChemVantage is an Open Educational Resource for college-level General Chemistry. Instructors have free access to thousands of question items suitable for quizzes, homework assignments and exams. ChemVantage is most useful when used as an LTI Advantage app with the class learning management system (LMS). Student scores on assignments are automatically returned to the LMS grade book. In addition, instructors can use Gen Chem placement exams for advising, video lectures with embedded quizlets, reading assignments with key concept questions and clicker-less in-class polls to sharpen student engagement. Student licenses are only $2 USD per month or $16 USD/year. Institutions can purchase student licenses in bulk for as little as $2/student/year.

Creative Commons License Use Survey Instrument

Rating
0.0 stars

This survey instrument is designed to understand how creators use (or decide not to use) Creative Commons licenses. The target survey participants are people who create materials for documentation, maintenance, instruction, learning, and/or revitalization of Indigenous, minority, endangered, and/or low-resourced languages. Part 1 of this survey is designed to learn about the digital creation formats and sharing practices in this specific community of practice. Parts 2 through 4 of this survey contain general questions intended to elicit information about research participants’ knowledge and awareness of Creative Commons (CC) licenses; understanding of how to apply CC licenses to their digital creations; interest in and experience with applying CC licenses to their digital creations; motivations for and barriers to applying CC licenses to their digital creations; and understanding of how to adapt or reuse digital creations licensed with CC licenses.

This survey can be easily adapted for use in other communities of practice by editing some of the questions and multiple-choice responses.

If you wish to read this survey and background information about it, please start with the file ReadMe-CCLuseSurvey.pdf.

The file Creative_Commons_License_Use_Survey.qsf is a Qualtrics Survey File that can be used to recreate this survey in your own instance of the Qualtrics software.

The file Creative_Commons_License_Use_Survey.pdf is a PDF of the survey. This version includes Creative Commons graphics that are used in the survey questions. The file ReadMe-CCLuseSurvey.pdf does not include the graphics.

Employer training in Australia: Current practices and concerns

This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. The video's transcript is also provided in full, with a portion provided below for preview:

"On-the-job training is critical to any enterprise But how and why employers train employees remains something of a mystery especially in Australia, where research on the subject appears outdated To provide a fresh look, researchers surveyed employers across several industries including government and community services retail and manufacturing Reasons for training seemed to agree with findings reported in older studies But some new trends emerged such as an accelerated need to master new technologies and an increased focus on business strategy— indications of a continuously changing workplace across the board And while financial constraints present a major barrier to training, companies report doing more training than they did five years ago with the amount of training not necessarily linked to the size of an organization Although comparative studies with other countries are needed to tease out further trends these findings could help organizations make more cost-effective decis.."

The rest of the transcript, along with a link to the research itself, is available on the resource itself.

Fence That Farmland!

Students develop and solidify their understanding of the concept of "perimeter" as they engage in a portion of the civil engineering task of land surveying. Specifically, they measure and calculate the perimeter of a fenced in area of "farmland," and see that this length is equivalent to the minimum required length of a fence to enclose it. Doing this for variously shaped areas confirms that the perimeter is the minimal length of fence required to enclose those shapes. Then students use the technology of a LEGO MINDSTORMS(TM) NXT robot to automate this task. After measuring the perimeter (and thus required fence length) of the "farmland," students see the NXT robot travel around this length, just as a surveyor might travel around an area during the course of surveying land or measuring for fence materials. While practicing their problem solving and measurement skills, students learn and reinforce their scientific and geometric vocabulary.

Today GPS is critical to positioning, navigation, and timing. The smooth functioning of financial transactions, air traffic, ATMs, cell phones and modern life in general around the world depend on GPS. This very criticality requires continuous modernization. The oldest satellites in the current constellation were launched in the 1990s. If you imagine using a computer of that vintage today, it is not surprising that the system is being substantially updated. Global Positioning System (GPS) is now a part of a growing international con?text-the Global Navigation Satellite System, GNSS. This course dives into how GPS and other GNSS systems are designed, how they operate, and the impacts they have on spatial analysis and spatially-enabled systems.

The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) and National Geographic commissioned a survey to gauge what young people educated in American colleges and universities know about geography, the environment, demographics, U.S. foreign policy, recent international events, and economics. The survey, conducted in May 2016 among 1,203 respondents aged eighteen to twenty-six, revealed significant gaps between what young people understand about today’s world and what they need to know to successfully navigate and compete in it. Included on site is the full survey report (PDF) and a sample quiz of some of the survey questions.
