The Spanish Language Immersion School is a public school with dedicated educators and committed parents who are creating an extraordinary experience for kids from K to Grade 5. Students arrive speaking English as their dominant language. They leave fluent in Spanish, but also filled with knowledge about various cultures, practiced in diversity, and possessing real skills that give them an educational and career advantage.

This site hosts two beginner adult ESL courses offered by Grossmont Community College: ESL 078 (with focus on listening fluency) and ESL 078R (with focus on reading proficiency). Each container offers materials for the first 2-4 (or more) weeks of the courses. The timing depends on the pace of a low-beginner class. Some classes may go faster and take 2 weeks, and some may need to go slower and may take up to 4 weeks.

The units that are offered are mostly for the instructor of the courses. This is because the teacher must lead the course with aural and verbal comprehension checks. At this level, students have very limited ability to communicate in any meaningful way, so the materials provide guidance to the teacher leading these courses.

The materials include videos, slideshows, vocabulary sheets, readings (such as original stories), teacher scripts, and simple assessments.

The materials are based on the principles that underlie contemporary language teaching in the area of Second Language Acquisition. The proficiency based approaches that have been used to create these materials are CI (comprehensible Input) and TPRS (Teaching Proficiency Through Reading and Story-Telling).

Students examine the connection between a person's home and his or her personality.

Students will practice their speaking skills while describing a landscape scene for a partner to draw.

Students discover how visual artists represent a story by depicting a single moment from it.

Students will think about a dramatic moment in their lives and imagine how to translate it into a work of art.

Students will make connections between their personal experiences and a work of art and use visual analysis to describe a portrait.

Students will "read" a visual image very much like they would read words in a story.

Students will spend more time looking at details and write an imagined interview with a sitter.

Students will apply what they have learned about portraits in a formal writing exercise.

This lesson focuses on a family depicted in a work of art. Students practice using vocabulary related to people and families. Activities emphasize oral and written descriptions of the people portrayed in the work of art, using possessive adjectives. Students are challenged to infer what the relationships are between figures depicted and what individuals are doing, based on such clues as their pose.
