"Patellar tendinopathy, or jumper’s knee, is a common injury in athletes of all skill levels. Aside from causing pain and dysfunction, the condition can be costly for individuals and sports teams. Physical therapy is critical, but consistently effective treatment regimens remain elusive. Regenerative therapy is one promising alternative, as platelet-rich plasma injection and cultured stem cell injection have been shown to repair other types of damaged tissue. To explore the benefits for jumper’s knee, researchers compared these two treatments in patients with patellar tendinopathy. The findings, reported in _The American Journal of Sports Medicine_, suggest that cultured stem cell injection is a particularly promising option for functional and structural healing. The researchers examined 20 male patients with patellar tendinopathy that had lasted for at least 4 months, was unresponsive to nonsurgical treatments, and featured lesions larger than 3 mm..."

Students are introduced to the concept and steps of the engineering design process and taught how to apply it. Students first receive some background information about biomedical engineering (aka bioengineering). Then they learn about material selection and material properties by using a provided guide. In small groups, students learn of their design challenge (improve a cast for a broken arm), brainstorm solutions, are given materials and create prototypes. To finish, teams communicate their design solutions through class poster presentations.

"Deciding when to return to sport following an ACL injury can be extremely challenging. Athletes must contend not only with the physical consequences, but also with the psychological ones. While readiness tests take various factors into account, it’s unclear how these factors might be linked. In a study published in _The American Journal of Sports Medicine_, researchers from Norway report on the association they found between psychological readiness to return to sport and tibial displacement. The study enrolled 132 patients aged 16 or older nine to twelve months after ACL reconstruction surgery. At baseline, patients completed a project-specific activity questionnaire and the ACL-Return to Sport After Injury scale evaluation. Knee laxity was assessed using the Lachman test, a KT-1000 arthrometer, and the pivot-shift test. Patients were followed-up two years after surgery..."

Professional rehabilitation counselors who work with clients who are Deaf or have disabilities at various points in their lifespan will often also work with family members. Therefore, the purpose of this course is to provide graduate students with information that will provide an understanding of the nature and needs of individuals at all developmental levels, from birth to old age. Family systems and how families who have members who are Deaf or who have disabilities will be
explored. Topics for this course will include the following: (a) a general overview of the expanded family life cycle; (b) an explanation of six developmental stages; (c) an introduction of family counseling theories and clinical application; (d) a demonstration of how to use genograms to track family history through the family life cycle; and (e) an understanding of how diverse characteristics including gender, spirituality, age, ethnic or cultural background, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status impact the family throughout the lifespan.

"Though a seemingly simple task, eating requires a coordinated effort between multiple oral muscles, such as those found in the tongue and lips. A new study conducted by researchers in Japan has found a link between the strength of these muscles and a condition called ‘nutrition-related sarcopenia’. From childhood through young adulthood, your muscles continually grow larger and stronger. At some point in mid-life, however, this trajectory switches course and many muscles begin to deteriorate, a progression termed sarcopenia. While this muscle loss is a natural part of the aging process, malnutrition has been suggested to amplify the problem. And, because nutritional intake involves oral function, degeneration of these muscles may play a role. In hopes of clarifying this relationship, the team evaluated more than 200 patients over the age of 65 for malnutrition and assessed factors such as tongue strength, lip strength, and the amount of food they ate..."

"Heart attacks, or myocardial infarctions, are a major cause of death globally and can leave survivors with severe, lingering symptoms. Exercise is a key rehabilitation tool, but exactly how it helps patients recover is not yet known. The microbes in our gut directly impact our health in other ways, but could they play a role in exercise-related recovery after heart attacks? To test this possibility, a team of researchers used a mouse model of myocardial infarction (MI). First, they demonstrated that exercise training reduced cardiac dysfunction after MI and that exercise after MI altered the gut microbial richness and community structure. Depleting the microbiota prior to MI blocked the protective effects of exercise, suggesting that the benefits were dependent upon the microbiota. Further, transplanting the gut microbiota from exercised post-MI mice conferred cardiac benefits to recipient mice..."
