City to City, as a class, will jump into the complexity of planning in New Orleans, a post-disaster city. City-to-City will ask how a post-disaster city grapple with its ideas of identity, what it is, who it represents, and how it projects its sense of self to residences, businesses, tourists, and to the outside world. In considering its people, how do city planners think about who lives where and why? At the same time, how can city planners celebrate a city's history and its culture and how can these elements be woven into reconstruction? Students will travel from Cambridge to New Orleans over Spring Break to meet and consult with their alumni clients, and continue to work on projects.

"Coronary heart disease is a serious condition, and its prognosis is largely determined by the degree of myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (MI/R) injury. MI/R injury occurs when blood returns to cardiac tissues and is partly a function of calcium overload and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. There is growing evidence that estrogen is protective against MI/R injury and a recent study examined the potential mechanisms of this protective effect in rats and cultured cells. Reducing estrogen levels by removing both ovaries exacerbated MI/R injury and reduced levels of SERCA2a, a critical calcium ion pump, but SERCA2a could be increased to nearly normal levels by estrogen supplementation (17β-estradiol). Both supplemental estrogen and exogenous SERCA2a overexpression decreased signs of ER stress and alleviated myocardial damage. Conversely, reducing SERCA2a expression exacerbated ER stress and myocardial damage, and adding estrogen after that reduction could not protect against the damage or ER stress..."

"It may be surprising to learn that drugs like morphine can actually make it harder to heal from injuries, including surgery. Researchers report that using opioids to manage this type of acute pain can make the pain last longer, potentially drawing out the need for pain relief. Although it’s unclear exactly why this happens, scientists are beginning to uncover some of the physiological causes of this delayed healing. And they think it has something to do with the brain’s immune system. That conclusion comes from an in-depth look at how morphine affects recovery in mice. Using a mouse model of orthopedic surgery, researchers looked at the consequences of postoperative morphine use. Mice were subjected to tibial fracture and repair and given a 7-day course of either morphine or an inactive vehicle. Some mice underwent a sham operation – they were anesthetized and received skin incisions, but no bone fracture – followed by the same treatment regimen..."

"Nitrogen removal is a critical part of the wastewater treatment process. and one of the most efficient ways to remove nitrogen from water is anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox). Anammox is a process mediated by bacteria that — via several biochemical steps — converts ammonium to nitrogen gas. Understanding how external factors like nutrient availability impact these organisms can help us optimize and maintain these systems. A recent study found that the anammox bacterial communities are resilient to short-term starvation. The community structure changed slightly, and the bacteria increased expression of important nutrient transporters and energy metabolism genes. Expression of key genes associated with anammox reactions were also increased in response to starvation. The anammox bacteria showed fewer differences in transcriptional patterns after starvation than heterotrophs, suggesting that the anammox bacteria had greater transcriptional resilience than the heterotrophs..."

"Shoulder dislocations and partial dislocations are some of the most common and disabling injuries in active young people, especially athletes. After the bone has been popped back and the initial agony is over, the issue of what to do next is much debated. One option is surgery to try to repair the damage, but whether that is preferable to less-invasive care remains controversial. Researchers now have evidence that supports the surgical option, at least for young people suffering a first event. The team monitored the degree of bone damage to the shoulder socket, or glenoid bone, which holds the head of the humerus in place. Until now, there has not been much information about the extent of this damage to guide a decision on the best approach. "Heart attacks, or myocardial infarctions, are a major cause of death globally and can leave survivors with severe, lingering symptoms. Exercise is a key rehabilitation tool, but exactly how it helps patients recover is not yet known. The microbes in our gut directly impact our health in other ways, but could they play a role in exercise-related recovery after heart attacks? To test this possibility, a team of researchers used a mouse model of myocardial infarction (MI). First, they demonstrated that exercise training reduced cardiac dysfunction after MI and that exercise after MI altered the gut microbial richness and community structure. Depleting the microbiota prior to MI blocked the protective effects of exercise, suggesting that the benefits were dependent upon the microbiota. Further, transplanting the gut microbiota from exercised post-MI mice conferred cardiac benefits to recipient mice..."

"The diaphragm aids in breathing and swallowing and influences the sympathetic nervous system. However, trauma from cardiac surgery and conditions like heart attacks can impair diaphragm function. A simple new test may help clinicians assess this critical muscle quickly and without instruments. The test, called the Bordoni diaphragmatic test (BDT), consists of two phases. In the first phase, the patient rhythmically lifts their knees while standing with hands on hips and eyes closed. Two knee lifts are conducted with deep breaths, and two more are conducted with normal breaths. If the diaphragm is functioning correctly, the patient’s balance should be better with deep breathing. The second phase is performed in the same way but with resistance from the tester’s hand. A patient with a healthy diaphragm should lift their legs more forcefully while inhaling deeply than while inhaling normally..."
