Moravian Migration: Before A Visit to Bethabara

Students investigate NCECHO site to "read all about" the 1753 Moravian settlement of Bethabara within our Social Sciences curriculum topic on Life Long Ago. The Historic Bethabara Park website has historic background in narrative and diary form. After reading and discussing this information in teams with the teacher, student teams present information to classmates in some visual product in one of five categories. Students also will visit the photos on NCECHO and answer analytical questions to increase understanding of the past as compared to today.

Pliny and the Eruption of Mt. Vesuvius

The purpose of this lesson is to use earth science concepts--from volcanology--to explain to students studying the letter of Pliny the Younger to the historian Tacitus how Mt. Vesuvius erupted in AD 79. Students will study and demonstrate mastery of the eruption and its historical impact through a webquest on Pompeii, reading of an articles with appropriate content-area reading support, participation in interactive lecture, writing of a journal entry about life in Pompeii at the time of the eruption, oral presentations on life in Pompeii, reviewing of the grammatical functions of all tenses of participles, and using a rubric to evaluate a video on Pompeii to be used for instruction.

Strategies For Reading and Comprehending Complex Scientific and Technology Text

This lesson is designed for learners in adult basic education (low and high level adult secondary education). The purpose of this lesson is to teach a step-wise method that involves increased complexity reading material that assists learners with building a staircase type strategy for reading scientific and technology text proficiently. The lesson topic will include guiding students in how to ask themselves questions before during and after a passage. The questions will be used to build a staircase of information that can be compared to what they already know and personal experiences. This strategy will not only assist with appropriately answer reading passage questions but can be applied to reading and understanding complex texts for higher education and documents in the workplace.
