Slides for lecture on Effective Problem Solving from Springfield Technical Community College's Communications and Editing 1 (OIT-110) course. Taught by Professor Eileen Cusick. This lecture focuses on office-related issues that need immediate attention.

In this activity, students will learn about and apply the Engineering Design Process to solve a problem. While working through the steps of the Engineering Design process they will focus on defining the criteria and constraints of a design problem, learn about scientific principles of simple machines, understand tool and machine safety, and create a prototype solution to the problem. The activity frames the problem around researching, designing, building and testing a prototype that is built with at least one simple machine that will launch a ball into a target. At end of unit students test their prototypes and present their findings of working through the process.

Successfully, transport the egg though the obstacle course in the shortest amount of time using only the materials given without touching or dropping the egg. Groups will modify the materials to create tools to aid in this process.

This is a STEM unit that can be used in conjunction with ITEEA EbD TEEMS Grade 2 Our Environment, Our Health Unit. Teachers might want to use this STEM Unit with environmental units and Earth Day. Students learn about their positive and negative impact on their environment. Students learn that they can have a positive impact on their environment when they use the 4 R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Redesign process.

This is an introdutory lesson to computer science combinded with a 3-part project, students will prepare for programming by practicing the problem-solving steps. They will select a problem that they are dealing with at home, at school, or a problem in the community. They will then research and gather data to help them find a step by step plan to solve the problem.      Lesson Includes: Activity, Pre-Post Survey, 3-part project and rubric 

A flow chart can be a useful tool in problem solving. You can see at a glance how your decisions and actions affect the outcome of your problem solving process. This lesson will help you learn the symbols and steps for writing a flowchart. 

For this 3-part project, students will prepare for programming by practicing the problem-solving steps. They will select a problem that they are dealing with at home, at school, or a problem in the community. They will then research and gather data to help them find a step by step plan to solve the problem. 

The students will explore, research, and become more knowledgeable in various careers in science. Students will apply this knowledge by creating a lab, hands-on activity, visual, or video. Opportunity for student choice is provided and creativity to apply their understanding is given.
