"Walking through the produce section at the grocery store, you are likely to find tomatoes of all shapes, sizes, and colors. One variety may be large and oblong with a hint of bitter flavor while another will have small, sweet fruits. This variance is primarily the result of genetic and chemical properties of the different varieties. But it turns out, environment also plays a role. A team of Italian scientists has shown that the molecular properties of tomatoes are strongly influenced by environmental factors such as temperature and moisture. And changing these factors can, in turn, have pronounced effects on the physical and culinary qualities of the fruits – an important finding considering the pace of current climate change. To tease apart the interaction between genetics, environment, and organoleptic traits, the research team grew three tomato varieties in two different locations. This exposed the plants to varying levels of moisture, soil acidity, and temperature, among other conditions..."

A Clinical Approach to the Human Brain

This course is designed to provide an understanding of how the human brain works in health and disease, and is intended for both the Brain and Cognitive Sciences major and the non-Brain and Cognitive Sciences major. Knowledge of how the human brain works is important for all citizens, and the lessons to be learned have enormous implications for public policy makers and educators.
The course will cover the regional anatomy of the brain and provide an introduction to the cellular function of neurons, synapses and neurotransmitters. Commonly used drugs that alter brain function can be understood through a knowledge of neurotransmitters. Along similar lines, common diseases that illustrate normal brain function will be discussed. Experimental animal studies that reveal how the brain works will be reviewed.
Throughout the seminar we will discuss clinical cases from Dr. Byrne's experience that illustrate brain function; in addition, articles from the scientific literature will be discussed in each class.

"The gilthead sea bream is one of the most important fish farmed in the Mediterranean. Selecting for economically valuable genetic traits has helped improve bream farming efficiency. But little is known about the role played by intestinal microbes in selective breeding practices. To find out, researchers examined how genetic selection for different growth rates and diet affect intestinal bacteria in the gilthead sea bream. Bream were divided into three groups according to genetically selected growth rate: slow, intermediate, and fast, and were fed a plant-based diet, a sustainable alternative for the normally carnivorous gilthead sea bream. The plant-based diet significantly changed the microbial makeup of the slow- and intermediate-growth groups, with a much weaker effect observed for the fast-growth group. And when exposed to an intestinal parasite common to the gilthead sea bream, the fast-growth group showed significantly lower parasite intensity and abundance than the slow-growth group..."

De student die dit vak met goed gevolg heeft doorlopen zal in staat zijn om: (1) Op basis van eigenschappen en gedrag onder externe invloeden een klassificatie te maken van materialen en op basis daarvan een eerste indruk te krijgen van hun geschiktheid in bepaalde toepassingen. (2) Inzicht te verkrijgen in de rol van materialen, materiaalgebruik en materiaalontwikkeling in de ontwikkeling, kwaliteit, mogelijkheden en bedreigingen van de samenleving afhankelijk van tijd, plaats en cultuur. Dit inzicht is gebaseerd op objectieve data. (3) Vast te stellen welke materiaaleigenschappen van kritisch belang zijn in mechanische en andere werktuigbouwkundige ontwerpen, en met behulp van eenduidige criteria materiaalkeuzes in de ontwerpcriteria van constructies te optimaliseren. De belangrijkste eigenschappen die aan de orde komen zijn dichtheid, stijfheid, sterkte, plasticiteit, breuk, vermoeiing, wrijving, slijtage. (4) Mechanische eigenschappen van materialen te herleiden tot chemische bindingen, onderlinge krachten, ordeningspatronen, defecten, en relatieve bewegingsmogelijkheden van atomen. De verschillende lengteschalen die materiaaleigenschappen bepalen staan hierbij centraal. Hiermee zal tevens inzicht verkregen worden in de mogelijkheden en beperkingen van materialen onder extreme omstandigheden en in de strategieën die gevolgd kunnen worden om materialen te verbeteren. (5) Optimale keuzes te maken binnen het beschikbare spectrum van procestechnieken (productie, bewerking, vorming, verbinding, afwerking) om componenten en eindproducten te vervaardigen. (6) Software te gebruiken waarmee, gegeven een aantal vereisten van materiaaleigenschappen, het beste materiaal voor een ontwerp kan worden geselecteerd. Deze materiaaleigenschappen gaan verder dan mechanische eigenschappen alleen. Thermische, elektrische, ecologische, economische en recycling-eigenschappen zullen in voorkomende gevallen ook meegewogen worden.

This course will consider the degree and nature of the modular organization of the mind and brain. We will focus in detail on the domains of objects, number, places, and people, drawing on evidence from behavioral studies in human infants, children, normal adults, neurological patients, and animals, as well as from studies using neural measures such as functional brain imaging and ERPs. With these domains as examples, we will address broader questions about the role of domain-general and domain-specific processing systems in mature human performance, the innateness vs. plasticity of encapsulated cognitive systems, the nature of the evidence for such systems, and the processes by which people link information flexibly across domains.
