This lesson introduces the concept of developmental domains.  They are separate concepts but work together to achieve individual growth and development.  This lesson is inquiry-based and will take between 40 and 50 minutes.

In the study of Child Development, physical growth is a complex process which entails learning about children's bodily movements and abilities. More specifically, gross motor skills are a type of physical abilities in which large muscle movements are exercised by young children during the early years of life. This is glimpse of what typical physical abilities children possess between ages 3 to 5.

Urban governance comprises the various forces, institutions, and movements that guide economic and physical development, the distribution of resources, social interactions, and other aspects of daily life in urban areas. This course examines governance from legal, political, social, and economic perspectives. In addition, we will discuss how these structures constrain collective decision making about particular urban issues (immigration, education…). Assignments will be nightly readings and a short paper relating an urban issue to the frameworks outlined in the class.

This is the first lesson in the PIESM Development Concepts, Physical Development. In this lesson, there is vocabulary, notes, and two activity stations that require observations. At the end, there is a reflective peice that requires use of student observation and analysis using developmental concepts learned. 

Physical development occurs as children learn how to use and take care of their growing bodies. It is a foundation for other learning and development. Children use their bodies for learning, by moving around and interacting with people and their environment. This learning trajectory look at gross motor skills, fine motor skills, sensory awareness, and physical health and self-care.
