In this study commissioned by Microsoft, the research firm Harris Interactive performed two surveys to examine methods used to inspire youth in pursuing science, technology, education, and math careers (STEM). Harris chose to survey college students engaged in STEM degrees and parents of K-12 students. Parents were surveyed with questions to gauge their perception on STEM education in the K-12 system, while students were asked questions related to how well their K-12 classes prepared them for college and where their motivation to pursue a STEM degree originated. It was found parents and students both agreed STEM in K-12 can be improved and most students feel underprepared when beginning STEM degree programs. Also, most students agreed they decided to pursue a STEM career in high school and their motivation was due to salary, job potential, and intellectual stimulation.
