The Oregon Department of Education released this online and offline lesson adaptation, as a part of the Distance Learning for All Erin's Law Toolkit for Districts. The lesson is an Advocates for Youth Rights, Respect, Responsibility (3Rs) Tenth Grade lesson entitled Using Technology Respectfully and Responsibly. This lesson focuses on the core sexuality education topics: Healthy & Unhealthy Relationships, Bullying and Abuse Prevention, Online Safety, and Consent, which are foundational to healthy relationships and bullying, violence, and child abuse prevention education. 3Rs Authors: Elizabeth Schroeder EdD MSW, Eva Goldfarb PhD, Nora Gelperin MEd 

This unit of study delves into internet safety and cybercrime. It explores some of the current online threats and what measures can be taken to prevent a cyber attack.

In collaboration with Common Sense Media, this lesson helps students learn that many websites ask for information that is private and discusses how to responsibly handle such requests. Students also find out that they can go to exciting places online, but they need to follow certain rules to remain safe.

In collaboration with **Common Sense Education**, this lesson helps students learn about the similarities of staying safe in the real world and when visiting websites. Students will also learn that the information they put online leaves a digital footprint or “trail.” This trail can be big or small, helpful or hurtful, depending on how they manage it.

Students explore why people use passwords, learn the benefits of using passwords, and discover strategies for creating and keeping strong, secure passwords.

Students learn password tips, test their existing passwords with an interactive game, and create new passwords using guidelines for powerful passwords.

Students learn the difference between private information and personal information, distinguishing what is safe and unsafe to share online.

Students will also explore what it means to be responsible and respectful to their offline and online communities as a step toward learning how to be good digital citizens.

As students visit sites that request information about their identities, they learn to adopt a critical inquiry process that empowers them to protect themselves and their families from identity theft. In this lesson, students learn to think critically about the user information that some websites request or require. They learn the difference between private information and personal information, as well as how to distinguish what is safe or unsafe to share online.

By creating an interactive poster with SpriteLab, students will apply their understanding of sharing personal and private information on the web.

The topics include digital citizenship, educational technology reviews and strategies, and professional development for educators.

This sequenced collection, curated by Seattle Public School educators, contains openly-licensed Digital Citizenship resources for K-5 educators.  

The inquiry helps students examine the responsibility of  being a citizen both in the real world and the online world. In answering the compelling question “How is being a citizen online the same as being one in real life?” students will identify the attitudes and actions necessary to be a good citizen. The unit offers 12 lessons with formative performance tasks for educators to choose from depending on the age and needs of their students. Each provides students with opportunities to collect evidence and an understanding of how online behavior and boundaries are comparable to those necessary in the real world.
