This course explores the experiences and understandings of class among Americans positioned at different points along the U.S. social spectrum. It considers a variety of classic frameworks for analyzing social class and uses memoirs, novels, and ethnographies to gain a sense of how class is experienced in daily life and how it intersects with other forms of social difference such as race and gender.

The goal of this exercise is to compare people's attitudes about the American Dream with their experiences of upward mobility at the turn of the 21st century. Crosstabulation will be used.

This course was co-developed by Dutch Innovation Centre for Electric Road Transport (Dutch-INCERT) and TU Delft and is taught by experts from both the industry and academia, who share their knowledge and insights.

"EVALUATION, VALUES, ENHANCEMENT"The Project involved 2 general education high schools, the Italian coordinator, and a Finnish partner: both have improved the quality of their provisions for learners through on-site (six) and virtual mobilities (two) for pupils and staff, increasing their ability to work in the framework of international projects. It has directly involved 100 people.The Project offered the opportunity:to reinforce the relevance of cooperation in an international context;to raise awareness of European citizenship and values;to share good practices.

The purpose of this seminar is to provide a context for understanding the challenges of urban food provisioning from a perspective of sustainability and social inclusion in cities of the global South. The seminar will be specifically geared towards preparing students for direct participation in urban markets and food policy project intervention in Cartagena, Colombia.

Transportation Engineering: Professional Practices & Priorities consists of two chapters: 1) Introducing Today's Sustainability-Minded Professional, and 2) Prioritizing Sustainable, Active, Resilient Mobility.

Students will use tables and visualizations of data about geographic mobility to explore rates and patterns of migration within, and immigration to, the United States. Using Census Bureau data tools, students will learn about past reasons for migration and immigration and understand the internal and external stresses of fluctuations in population.

In this course, we explore how new mobility systems can be leveraged to promote equity, improve health outcomes, and increase accessibility. Lectures by transportation professors from Europe, Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the United States are supplemented with interviews with preeminent entrepreneurs, city planners, community development experts, and mobility justice advocates.
Topics covered include land use and urban form; new mobility business models, pricing, policy, technology, and data; the importance of designing new mobility systems for equity, health, and the environment; and racial justice within the transportation field.

Music is a mobile art. When people move to faraway places, whether by choice or by force, they bring their music along. Music creates a meaningful point of contact for individuals and for groups; it can encourage curiosity and foster understanding; and it can preserve a sense of identity and comfort in an unfamiliar or hostile environment. As music crosses cultural, linguistic, and political boundaries, it continually changes. While human mobility and mediation have always shaped music-making, our current era of digital connectedness introduces new creative opportunities and inspiration even as it extends concerns about issues such as copyright infringement and cultural appropriation.

This project-based course explores new design strategies for social interaction in the computer mediated world. Through weekly readings and design assignments we will examine topics such as:

Data-based portraiture
Depicting growth, change and the passage of time
Visualizing conversations, crowds, and networks
Interfaces for the connected city
Mobile social technologies

The course emphasizes developing visual and interactive literacy.

This course explores the importance of public transportation to social and economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and seeks to identify approaches to restoring transit ridership, with a focus on Metro Boston. We will attempt to (1) understand whether and how the COVID-19 pandemic can advance sustainable mobility, and specifically the role(s) of public transportation in the COVID-19 recovery process, and (2) identify policies and/or interventions that may encourage pre-COVID transit riders to return to transit and attract net new transit ridership.

According to the United States Agency for International Development, 20 million people in developing countries require wheelchairs, and the United Nations Development Programme estimates below 1% of their need is being met in Africa by local production. Wheelchair Design in Developing Countries (WDDC) gives students the chance to better the lives of others by improving wheelchairs and tricycles made in the developing world. Lectures will focus on understanding local factors, such as operating environments, social stigmas against the disabled, and manufacturing constraints, and then applying sound scientific/engineering knowledge to develop appropriate technical solutions. Multidisciplinary student teams will conduct term-long projects on topics such as hardware design, manufacturing optimization, biomechanics modeling, and business plan development. Theory will further be connected to real-world implementation during guest lectures by MIT faculty, Third-World community partners, and U.S. wheelchair organizations.
