"Individuals with metabolic syndrome have a 2-fold increased risk of cardiovascular disease, but few strategies provide adequate cardiovascular risk reduction for this group. One option to lower this risk is to reduce atherogenic lipids, particularly low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Statins are a recommended first-line therapy for this purpose, but this approach doesn’t always provide sufficient LDL-C lowering to optimally reduce cardiovascular risk. Now, researchers have shown that alirocumab, a proprotein converstase subtilisin/kexin type 9 inhibitor, or PCSK9 inhibitor, approved for LDL-C reduction, may address this need. Pooled clinical trial data from ten phase 3 clinical trials from the ODYSSEY clinical development program showed alirocumab significantly lowered LDL-C in individuals both with and without metabolic syndrome..."

"The gut microbiome – comprising the microbes that reside inside our digestive systems – produces many metabolites that affect human physiology. The composition and diversity of gut microbes has been associated with diseases as diverse as GI disorders, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, depression, and rheumatoid arthritis. To better understand the relationship between diet and gut microbiota, a recent study used a cross-sectional approach. By examining fecal microbiota from the Cooperative Health Research in the Region of Augsburg study, including 1,992 participants, researchers applied latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) to identify 20 microbial subgroups within the population. They found that 8 of 20 subgroups were associated with dietary habits, while 9 of 20 were associated with the prevalence of metabolic diseases and risk factors..."

"The skin micro-environment varies across the body. But one thing that remains constant is the presence of microorganisms that affect skin health. In a recent study, researchers gathered more than 800 organisms from 3 body sites of 17 individuals. Analyses revealed 30+ bacterial genera and 14+ fungal genera, with the most prevalent being Staphylococcus and Micrococcus bacteria. Further tests showed that the collected microbes had the capacity to break down a variety of compounds. including amino acids, steroids, lipids, and sugars, as well as compounds derived from personal care products. This collection of micro-organisms represents a valuable resource for skin microbiome research, with the potential for developing novel therapeutics and for gaining insight into the metabolic activities of the skin microbiota..."
