VCCS's "Pathways" Course provides faculty with an introduction to the laws that influence the use, re-use, and distribution of content they may want to use in a course. Activities include finding openly licensed content for use in a class and publishing openly licensed works created by faculty. At the end of the course, students will have openly licensed content that will be ready for use in a course.

This module takes a look at the advantages of OER and the Creative Commons for both instructors and their learners. Both instructors and learners can enjoy using OER as well as creating it for use by others!

The Copyright Crash Course was created by Georgia Harper and is currently maintained by UT Libraries. The Course is arranged into several sections that allow users to explore certain areas of copyright law individually or as a group. The Course was originally created with faculty in mind, but can be used by anyone who is interested in understanding and managing their copyrights.

This webinar complete with slides, a video, and an extra resources/Q&A briefing at the end is a wonderful place to start if you've never studied copyright before. It could accompany some basic copyright readings, or be used as a copyright primer on its own. It is geared towards a library science audience and is a straightforward introduction to copyright formation, fair use, basic licensing, and Creative Commons licensing.

This open education online course is designed for librarians to gain a basic understanding in copyright, international copyright issues, licensing, and it even contains a module on traditional knowledge and activism.

The modules on activism and traditional knowledge make this resource a bit unique and useful as an add-on to any "traditional" copyright training modules.

This is a full length textbook explaining copyright for librarians. It has a particularly helpful chapter explaining international treaties and the Berne three-step test. The chapter on "creative approaches and alternatives" has a helpful introduction to the Creative Commons as well as Open Access.

It also has helpful case study examples to demonstrate the concepts in an applied manner which really will help students to better understand the content of the textbook.

This video is intended to help you choose compatible resources and choose a valid license for your work. Suppose you are developing an open educational resource (OER), and you want to use some other OER within yours. If you create a derivative work by adapting or combining works offered under Creative Common licenses, you must not only follow the terms of each of the licenses involved, but also choose a license for your work that is compatible with the other licenses

Despite the importance of patent landscape analyses in the commercialization process for life science and healthcare technologies, the quality of reporting for patent landscapes published in academic journals is inadequate. Patents in the life sciences are a critical metric of innovation and a cornerstone for the commercialization of new life-science- and healthcare-related technologies. Patent landscaping has emerged as a methodology for analyzing multiple patent documents to uncover technological trends, geographic distributions of patents, patenting trends and scope, highly cited patents and a number of other uses. Many such analyses are published in high-impact journals, potentially allowing them to gain high visibility among academic, industry and government stakeholders. Such analyses may be used to inform decision-making processes, such as prioritization of funding areas, identification of commercial competition (and therefore strategy development), or implementation of policy to encourage innovation or to ensure responsible licensing of technologies. Patent landscaping may also provide a means for answering fundamental questions regarding the benefits and drawbacks of patenting in the life sciences, a subject on which there remains considerable debate but limited empirical evidence.

A brief overview of the history of copyright laws and why the Creative Commons was right on time!

These guidelines have arisen from the University of Western Cape (UWC) Faculty of Dentistry's experiences of participating in the African Health OER pilot project. It covers copyright policy, attribution and acknowledgement procedures, and the peer review process for content released as Open Education Resources (OER).

This course is concerned with the concepts and principles which have been of central significance in the recent development of syntactic theory, with special focus on the "Government and Binding" (GB) / "Principles and Parameters" (P&P) / "Minimalist Program" (MP) approach.
It is the first of a series of two courses (24.951 is taught during the Fall and 24.952 is taught in the Spring). This course deals mostly with phrase structure, argument structure and its syntactic expression, including "A-movement". Though other issues (e.g. wh-movement, antecedent-contained deletion, extraposition) may be mentioned during the semester, the course will not systematically investigate these topics in class until 24.952.
The goal of the course is to understand why certain problems have been treated in certain ways. Thus, on many occasions a variety of approaches will be discussed, and the (recent) historical development of these approaches are emphasized.

The OSF is a free, open source web application built to help researchers manage their workflows. The OSF is part collaboration tool, part version control software, and part data archive. The OSF connects to popular tools researchers already use, like Dropbox, Box, Github, Mendeley, and now is integrated with JASP, to streamline workflows and increase efficiency.

OER Passport is a professional development program that takes educators through the process of understanding, finding, developing and sharing Open Educational Resources.

This course trains teachers and students on OER use, reuse, licensing, creation, and sharing by completing the following tasks. The first three tasks lay a solid foundation and provide teachers with the tools to complete the last three tasks which focus on the use, reuse, production, and innovative teaching practices.

Participants can complete the tasks online. There are also files to print/create physical copies of OER Passports that can be used in an offline environment.

"Open Access Explained" is an excellent short YouTube video created by Nick Shockey and Jonathan Eisen that explains the reasoning for Open Access publishing.

Open Access publishing with a Creative Commons Attribution License Ageement, for example (CC-BY 4.0 Interntional) for publications and research data is currently required by federal agencies within the United States with Publication/Data public access policies. In addition, more International Foundations like the Gates Foundation have established an Open Access Policy effective for all new agreements.

This course is an intensive introduction to the U.S. law of intellectual property with major emphasis on patents, including what can be patented, the process of patent application, and the remedies for patent infringement.

This guide provides a primer on copyright and use permissions. It is intended to support teachers, librarians, curriculum experts and others in identifying the terms of use for digital resources, so that the resources may be appropriately (and legally) used as part of lessons and instruction. The guide also helps educators and curriculum experts in approaching the task of securing permission to use copyrighted materials in their classrooms, collections, libraries or elsewhere in new ways and with fewer restrictions than fair use potentially offers. The guide was created as part of ISKME's Primary Source Project, and is the result of collaboration with copyright holders, intellectual property experts, and educators.
