This textbook provides a toolbox, a guidebook, and an instruction manual for researchers and interventionists who want to conceptualize and study applied problems from a developmental systems perspective, and for those who want to teach their graduate (or advanced undergraduate) students how to do this. The shift from apartheid to a constitutional democracy in South Africa brought with it a plethora of questions concerning ideas of nationhood, citizenship, and organisational transformation. Integrally caught up in the revolution, the South African Police Service (SAPS) faces transformative challenges on scales far larger than most other organisations in the country. From being the strong arm of the oppressive elite, it has had to restructure and rearticulate its function, while simultaneously attempting to maintain law and order. Like many other corporations and organisations, the SAPS has engaged in interventions aimed at aiding the fluidity of this process. This report is an analysis of one such intervention. It attempts to ascertain the extent to which members are changing as a result of particular diversity workshops conducted in a region of the Western Cape. The analysis focuses on members at one particular station.

This course surveys the social science literature on civil war. Students will study the origins of civil war, discuss variables that affect the duration of civil war, and examine the termination of conflict. This course is highly interdisciplinary and covers a wide variety of cases.

This course introduces incoming students in the Master in City Planning (MCP) program to the theory and history of planning in the public interest. It relies primarily on challenging real-world cases to highlight persistent dilemmas: the power and limits of planning, the multiple roles in which planners find themselves in communities around the globe, and the political, ethical, and practical dilemmas that planners face as they try to be effective. As such, the course provides an introduction to the major ideas and debates that define what the field labels "planning theory," as well as a (necessarily) condensed global history of modern planning.
Courses in planning history, politics, and ethics—often several of them—are required in all accredited graduate programs in planning in the U.S. Gateway: Planning Action combines those contents, with a stronger focus on real-world cases than more conventional lecture-based planning theory and history courses at other schools. It also adds several opportunities to strengthen hands-on professional competencies, especially in communication.

In this presentation we will answer the two following questions regarding the Mass Drug Administration (MDA) intervention. What are the feasibility of the intervention and how can we monitor the evolution of Malaria and check whether or not the intervention had the expected impact?

This presentation provides an introduction to the eye disease, Trachoma. Trachoma is a serious health problem in low income countries, causing much suffering and blindness among the poorest populations in 52 countries worldwide. In continuation of this, we will talk about the epidemiology of Trachoma and provide a description of the disease, the risk factors, transmission modes, preventive strategies and interventions including mass drug administration.

In this presentation, we will focus on the SHOP system and ow is has affected the participant’s health. In continuation of this, we will provide an introduction, to the computer system, developed to monitor and control the participant’s nutritional composition of the food they collected in the shop.

Besides measuring the health effects of school meals based on the New Nordic Diet, the OPUS Study also evaluated the effect of the intervention on cognitive performance of the children. In continuation of this, we will explain why it is relevant to measure cognitive performance and provide a short summary of the methods we used and the findings.
