In this lesson, students expand their understanding of solid waste management to include the idea of 3RC (reduce, reuse, recycle and compost). They will look at the effects of packaging decisions (reducing) and learn about engineering advancements in packaging materials and solid waste management. Also, they will observe biodegradation in a model landfill (composting).

The Colourful World Game presents the player with problems related to sustainability that he/she must solve by exploring the game's environment, gathering information/following clues, and collecting and using items.

The player is visited by different animals seeking help after experiencing the consequences of unsustainable human behaviours. The player then has to explore different scenarios in order to resolve the situation and return the animals to their habitat.

Following research activities conducted by the Colourful World consortium, the Game has been designed to facilitate acquisition of Sustainable Development related competences by children.

In our european project “Circular Economy as a tool to develop an innovative eco-inclusive social entrepreneurship educational pattern for youth" cofunded by Erasmus+, the partnership developed a competency framework and report combining data and information from 6 partner countries, designed to inform Young people and Youth workers interested in Social Entrepreneurship through Circular Economy, including 7 key competences to embark on a Social Entrepreneurship endeavour through Circular Economy models.

Students will discuss the environment and their favorite ways to get around and things to do outside. Students will also be able to compare and contrast between transportation options in both their hometown and Spanish speaking countries.

Student teams learn about engineering design of green fluorescent proteins (GFPs) and their use in medical research, including stem cell research. They simulate the use of GFPs by adding fluorescent dye to water and letting a flower or plant to transport the dye throughout its structure. Students apply their knowledge of GFPs to engineering applications in the medical, environmental and space exploration fields. Due to the fluorescing nature of the dye, plant life of any color, light or dark, can be used unlike dyes that can only be seen in visible light.

Students explore the concept of "reducing" solid waste and how it relates to product packaging and engineering advancements in packaging materials. They read about and evaluate the highly publicized packaging decisions of two major U.S. corporations. Then they evaluate different ways to package items in order to minimize the environmental impact, while considering issues such as cost, availability, product attractiveness, etc. In addition, students explore "hydropulping" and consider its use as a recycling process.

This article includes lessons that elementary teachers can use to build the foundations of climate literacy while meeting elementary science standards. Lessons are paired with literacy activities as well.

Students show their creativity and think like engineers as they design products or services that can be used to improve environmental problems in the community. While being aware of the steps of the engineering design process, students are challenged to consider all aspects of their products/services, including their costs, and impacts on the environment and people in their communities. They present their "green" solutions, in the form of advertisements, to the class for critical review of their feasibility.
