In this lesson we explore how bullying can affect us all, even when it’s not happening directly to us we might feel confused, scared, and uncomfortable. We read a book called Beautifully Me about a young girl who is confused about the ways people are talking about bodies- specifically large, or fat bodies. We talk about how feelings and emotions can be signals to us, sometimes they’re letting us know something in our world doesn't make sense and we might need help figuring it out. The lesson ends by thinking of the people/adults at home and school that they can go to for help.

This lesson focuses on treating others with respect regarding gender expression. In the lesson students use their culminating understanding of gender and gender expression to create paper dolls. Then they use the dolls to role play a respectful, affirming and inclusive approach to the gender expression of  themselves and others.

Over the course of five sessions the teacher reads five books aloud from the list of recommended texts found in the Educator's Materials section. The teacher asks a series of discussion questions and records the answers on a process grid/anchor chart.

In this lesson, students will deepen their understanding of gender expression through the use of anchor texts and a video. They will apply their understanding through a self-portrait that reflects an iteration of their gender expression.

This unit studies how manliness or lack of manliness affects Macbeth. Shakespeare presents a very strong Lady Macbeth who is in control of a fearful and hesitant Macbeth. The supernatural power of the weird sisters lures Macbeth to believe he should be king, and he seems to succumb to the power of women that is evoked by their feminine presence. The differences between man and woman loom throughout the text. The sexual and gender differences, the masculine and the feminine, constantly cross the boundaries and prove ambiguous. The unit analyzes and discusses Macbeth’s gender identity, and the authority it may have on Macbeth’s ethics. The students also read excerpts from “The History of Sexuality” by Michele Foucault, excerpts from “Performative Acts and Gender Constitution” by Judith Butler, excerpts from “Sexual Transformation” by Gayle Rubin, and excerpts from “Female Masculinity” by Judith Halberstam. One goal of the unit is to make students understand, reflect about, discuss, and argue how Shakespeare sees gender, its influence on decision-making, and the reactions it might provoke. The other goal is to help students question their own stereotypes about gender and facile generalizations and/or prejudices. The unit adheres to the new Common Core Standards.

This course analyzes mainstream, popular films produced in the post-World War II 20th century U.S. as cultural texts that shed light on ongoing historical struggles over gender identity and appropriate sexual behaviors. It traces the history of LGBTQ/queer film through the 20th and into the 21st century. It also examines the effect of the Hollywood Production Code and censorship of sexual themes and content, and the subsequent subversion of queer cultural production in embedded codes and metaphors. In addition, this course also considers the significance of these films as artifacts and examples of various aspects of queer theory.

Students will explore gender expression, gender identity, sexual orientation, and gender stereotypes. Students will discuss such topics as a safe space, demonstrating respect, and making assumptions based on expression

In this lesson students use the co-created process grid and their journal to create a collage using visuals and words from magazines to illustrate and celebrate all aspects of their identities, with the invitation to include gender expression and gender.
