This resource contains presentations from one of the Center for Automotive Research's (CAR's) breakfast briefings titled "Automotive Fuels and Emissions: Policies, Compliance, & Potential Impact of Future Technologies." This briefing occurred on 12/5/13 at Robert Bosch LLC in Farmington Hills, MI. At the briefing presenters discussed the strategic implications of Tier 3 regulations which will soon be finalized and may impact future technology decisions in a multitude of ways. The impact of Tier 3 emission regulations is expected to be far reaching as they have the potential to influence the quality of fuel, as well as usage of alternative fuels and powertrains. Further, the regulations will have a direct influence on the technologies, such as diesel and gasoline direct injection, that automakers will utilize to meet the fuel economy standards through MY2025. Included in this resource are the presentations from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Volkswagen, and Bosch utilized at the briefing.

As the carbon dioxide concentration of our atmosphere increases and our climate warms, the hay fever season seems to be getting longer and more severe. In this case study, students assume the a role of a public relations specialist contracted to communicate the link between climate change and pollen allergies. The activity focuses on the importance of scientific skills to careers outside science, and is most suitable for a lower-level introductory biology, human health, or environmental science course.

AIRNow is a cross-agency U.S. government web site that provides information and forecasts of air quality across the country. The organization's home page features news articles, information on the Air Quality Index (AQI), and highlighted forecasts for areas with AQIs of special concern. An interactive map shows weather systems, winds, and areas where air quality is likely to be compromised by ozone, particulates, ultraviolet radiation, or other pollutants, with links to current conditions, forecasts, and webcams for selected cities. There are also links to educational materials on air quality for younger students, interactive features and visual materials for older students, and curriculum materials for teachers. Other resources include information on AQI for health providers, older adults, and TV weathercasters; information on air quality and personal health, smoke from fires, and links to air quality information from other countries.

Archive of the Environmental Science Seminar Series, sponsored by the American Meteorological Society (AMS), presenting talks by major research scientists. The series is aimed at the general public and moderated by Dr. Anthony Socci (Senior Science Fellow, AMS). The archive includes summaries, powerpoint presentations (in HTML and PDF), and speaker biographies for each of the seminars, which have been offered approximately once a month since May 2005. The June 2007 presentation by Dr. Naomi Oreskes (History, UCSD), entitled "The Scientific Consensus on Climate Change: How Do We Know We Are Not Wrong?" is accompanied by the full text of her chapter by the same title in DeMento and Doughman, eds., Climate Change (MIT Press, 2007).

The module examines the 2009 drought in the Greater Horn of Africa (GHA), focusing on conditions in Kenya. The module begins by reviewing drought conditions in the years leading up to 2009. From there, it examines the seasonal climate forecast for the beginning of 2009 and see what it portends. Satellite products are used to study rainfall performance throughout the year and its impact on the drought situation. Finally, the module describes the climate oscillations that can impact drought in the GHA and identifies patterns that were present in 2009 and contributed to its severity. By the end of the module, weather forecasters and students should have a better understanding of drought and the tools available for its early detection and monitoring.

The COSEE network promotes a better understanding of the key role the ocean plays in global environmental cycles and processes. COSEE activities highlight the contributions ocean-science researchers make to scientific knowledge in these important areas. Each COSEE represents one or more ocean science research institution, an informal science education organization, and at least one affiliate organization representing the formal education community.

This lesson focuses on a current issue in science in order to help students understand the process by which scientific knowledge is developed and refined. The goal of science is to advance human understanding of the natural world and that sometimes means changing long-held views. According to recent studies, many students think that changes come mainly through facts and improved observational and measuring technology. However, they often do not make the distinction that advancements or changes can come from both new observations and reinterpreting old observations.

The teaching ideas on this page have been found, refined, and developed by students in a college-level course on the teaching of biology at the elementary level. Unless otherwise noted, the lesson plans have been tried at least once by students from our partner schools. This wiki has been established to share ideas about teaching biology in elementary schools. The motivation behind the creation of this page is twofold: 1. to provide an outlet for the teaching ideas of a group of college educators participating in a workshop-style course; 2. to provide a space where anyone else interested in this topic can place their ideas.
