Generation Rising: Asian Americans in the Arts

During the 1970s, arts and culture became vehicles for elevating the narratives of Asian Americans, a term first used in 1968 during the struggle to establish ethnic studies at San Francisco State College. Under this new pan-Asian identity, a generation of young Asian American organizers, academics, and artists emerged and ready to define themselves and their history to the rest of America. Musicians, artists, writers and filmmakers helped to increase the visibility of Asian American identities and cultures across various media.

In this packet we look at works that span nearly a thousand yearsäóîfrom shortly after the foundation of Islam in the seventh century to the seventeenth century when the last two great Islamic empiresäóîthe Ottoman and the Safavidäóîhad reached their peak. Although the definition of Islamic art usually includes work made in Mughal India, it is beyond the scope of this packet. The works we will look at here come from as far west as Spain and as far east as Afghanistan.

Quilt Block Collage
(art + history)

Quilts, or the process of quilting (sewing together layers of fabric and batting), date back to Ancient Egypt and China and continue to be a modern art form. They are used to tell stories, pass down family histories, celebrate weddings and births and as pieces of art to be hung on a wall and admired. What we think of as “quilts” today — small pieces of fabric sewn together to form blocks that collectively make a whole piece — did not become popular until the mid 19th century. Making quilt blocks was a means of “recycling” pieces of fabric from clothing that was no longer usable. In this lesson plan, students will have an opportunity to study quilts through history and make their own quilt block, using paper and glue rather than fabric and stitching. It’s a great way to recycle materials and illustrate a number of design principles — rhythm, pattern, balance and unity.
