This text includes chapters from instructional designers, university faculty and staff, and undergraduate and graduate students, and the text has been divided into three sections to reflect these varied perspectives. Each section begins with research-based perspectives, but also contains more personal narratives at the end. While the context of most of the chapters is the United States, there are also chapters with a Canadian context. It is also important to note that, as of the first half of 2021, the pandemic rages on, and mentions of COVID-19 in the following chapters will be reflective of the state of affairs in North America in the spring and fall of 2020.

This OER campus administrator guide, officially entitled "OER & Online Learning: Administrator Quick Start Guide, Strengthening the Shift to Online Learning in California Community Colleges Through the Use of OER", is an outcome of a project by ISKME, supported by a grant from the Michelson 20MM Foundation, to conduct a study and develop a set of resources to accelerate OER use for distance education, especially the urgent shift to remote learning during the pandemic in 2020.
The Guide, created in collaboration with a selection of OER and online education champions across California community colleges (CCC), seeks to support community college administrators in California and beyond in more effectively supporting faculty use of OER as they work to address the reality of online learning in response to COVID-19 and future disruptions. The guide provides quick tips and starting points for campus administrators as they work to create the policy and practice environments needed to foster increased OER use for online learning.

The Guide, created in collaboration with a selection of OER and online education champions across California community colleges (CCC), contains:
- Models and approaches to online learning, and to emergency remote learning in the context of COVID-19;
- How and to what extent OER fits into these models, and local and state-level supports needed for its integration and sustainability;
- Design considerations for integrating OER in online learning, including pedagogical and platform considerations;
- Curatorial practices, such as using OER curation tools and aligning curated OER to learning outcomes; and,
- Starting points and tips for colleges and faculty who want to initiate OER integration into distance education.
Tailored to faculty and campus administrators both in California and beyond, the Guide has the aim is to enable system-wide shifts to meet postsecondary institutions’ long term goals for distance learning, and faculty’s emergency plans for remote learning in response to the COVID-19 and potential future crises.

We are all looking for practical strategies to make our teaching engaging and impactful during these unusual times. The chart below outlines some common teaching goals and the face-to-face (F2F) active learning techniques often used to achieve those goals, along with corresponding approaches for online synchronous, online asynchronous, and physically-distanced settings.
This resource is a video abstract of a research paper created by Research Square on behalf of its authors. It provides a synopsis that's easy to understand, and can be used to introduce the topics it covers to students, researchers, and the general public. "COVID-19, caused by the enveloped RNA virus SARS-CoV-2, primarily affects the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems. Disease severity varies substantially across patients; the disease is mild or asymptomatic in some cases and causes respiratory failure or death in others. SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA has been detected in fecal samples, suggesting that the gastrointestinal tract may be a site of viral replication. To better understand the effect of SARS-CoV-2 on resident gut viruses (the “gut virome”), researchers examined blood samples and fecal specimens from 98 patients with COVID-19 and 78 healthy individuals. Using shotgun metagenomics, they found that patients with COVID-19 had decreased abundance of certain RNA viruses and DNA-based bacteriophages. In contrast, environment-derived eukaryotic DNA viruses were enriched in COVID-19 patients..."
