Designing a Medical Device to Extract Foreign Bodies from the Ear
Read the Fine Print
Educational Use
Rating
0.0 stars

Students learn the engineering design process by following the steps, from problem identification to designing a device and evaluating its efficacy and areas for improvement. A quick story at the beginning of the activity sets up the challenge: A small child put a pebble in his ear and we don't know how to get it out! Acting as biomedical engineers, students are asked to design a device to remove it. Each student pair is provided with a model ear canal and a variety of classroom materials. A worksheet guides the design process as students create devices and attempt to extract pebbles from the ear canal.

Developmental Psychology: A Canadian Perspective
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted

Rating
0.0 stars

Short Description:
This book introduces you to the basic concepts of developmental psychology from a lifespan perspective. It presents development as a lifelong process that can be understood from physical, cognitive, and psychosocial dimensions. It also incorporates information relevant to the Canadian context with ideas derived from indigenous knowledge and experiences. In each chapter, up-to-date research findings describe and explain biological, psychological, and social development across the life course. Research is presented in an accessible and engaging manner that allows students to situate their own experience within the lifespan view of psychology.

Long Description:
This textbook begins with a comprehensive review of the major theoretical approaches that shape our understanding of development from conception to death. What is the difference between chronological age and social age? What is the difference between a generation and a life stage? How do differences in life experiences with respect to cultural and economic resources shape development? How do genes and environments interact to influence development? Do people change or remain the same across the life course? The theoretical approaches that address these big picture questions carry through the textbook as themes that guide empirical research on processes of development.
