This lesson introduces the concept of cause and effect with Trinka Hakes Noble's books about Jimmy and his boa constrictor. Each lesson begins with the teacher reading a new story about Jimmy and his boa and the chaos they bring to each place they visit. Class discussions about each event and its cause are followed by tasks for the students to help illustrate understanding of the concept. Students create cause-and-effect pictures, puzzles, and flow charts as they explore the genre. As a culminating activity, students write their own book with causes and effects, which are assessed with a rubric.

Audience:
Kristina designed this activity for children but it can easily be adapted to all ages. It is an excellent way for the participants to explore emotions.

Description: In this activity students become acquainted with the anatomy and biology of seeds. They will use lenses and scales and make drawings to scale. Students will measure and calculate magnifications and they will begin to understand relationships among these. They will organize and summarize their data and, as they do so, they will be developing the understanding and skills needed to undertake more detailed investigations on the biology and reproduction of Fast Plants. Learning Objectives This activity is designed to strengthen students' observational and quantitative skills. In participating in this activity students will: - learn to use magnifying lenses, microscopes and dissecting tools for detailed observation" - measure scales with rulers" - draw to scale, with accuracy and precision to understand scale and magnification" - learn features of the external anatomy of seeds that are associated with certain features of the internal anatomy of seeds" and - estimate the amount of water required to be taken up by seeds in order to initiate germination.

This is a very well-produced website with material on a wide range of art-related topics. There are essays on specific artists and on more quirky topics like pop star clothing. The images on individual art historical movements are interactive, click and more information appears. There are embedded videos on certain topics. It is a relatively comprehensive and entertaining website, although the topics have to be searched for - it is not chronologically laid out as a text.

 Issues of race, privilege and white power are the foundation of this lesson. The CTE standard we are addressing involves looking at expressions of art in society. Students will complete activities examining different forms of media/arts and look at the lack of diversity in most media. For many students, this lesson may be a first introduction to the concept of white privilege and we will provide space to digest and express this idea. We will be sharing our experiences and journeys to greater awareness. An underlying goal of this lesson is for students to be able to form independent opinions around these issues, perhaps different from ideas or opinions they were raised with.

SALT Beyoğlu’nda düzenlenen “Ben bir stüdyo sanatçısı değilim” sergisindeki temaları açıklayan bu Yorumlama Rehberi, eğitimciler ve lise öğrencileri için bir kaynakça olarak hazırlanmıştır. Eğitimcilerin, rehberin içeriğindeki aktiviteler, multimedya kaynakları, terminoloji ve tartışma olanaklarını öğrencilerinin ihtiyaçlarına en iyi cevap verecek şekilde düzenleyerek müfredatlarına uyarlamalarını öneririz.

2007 yılının sonunda kaybettiğimiz Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin, sanatçı kimliğinin yanı sıra düşünür, öğretim üyesi, yazar ve küratör olarak kültürel üretime katkıda bulundu. 1990’ların başından itibaren sanat üretimine yoğunlaşan Alptekin, eserlerinde küreselleşmenin etkileri, göç ve sürgün, kültürlerarası imge dolaşımı gibi temaları inceledi. İşbirliği ve müellifsiz üretim ile ilgilenen Alptekin, kariyeri boyunca Grup Grip-in, Sea Elephant Travel Agency [Deniz Fili Seyahat Acentası] ve Bunker Research Group [Korugan Araştırma Grubu] gibi birçok grup kurdu. İşlerinde fotoğraf enstalasyonları, kolajlar, videolar, nesneler -kasası plastik futbol toplarıyla dolu bir kamyon gibi- birçok farklı malzeme ve yöntemler kullanarak, birbirine referans veren çok katmanlı bir görsel dil yarattı.

“Ben bir stüdyo sanatçısı değilim”, sanatçının Türkiye’de ve uluslararası platformda düzenlenen en kapsamlı sergisi olma niteliğini taşıyor.

This SALT Interpretation Pack has been designed as a resource for educators and students as they explore the themes of the Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin “I am not a studio artist” exhibition at SALT Beyoğlu in Istanbul, Turkey. Designed for use in high school classrooms, its contents include activities, multimedia resources, terminology and opportunities for discussion. Educators are encouraged to adapt, shape and build upon these materials to best meet the needs of their students and teaching curricula.

Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin was an artist, thinker, teacher, writer and curator who passed away in 2007. In the early 1990s, Alptekin began to form an artistic production that explored the effects of globalization, immigration and exile, as well as cross-cultural image circulation. Alptekin was a determined collaborator interested in authorless production, and throughout his career formed many artist-run collaboratives, including Grup Grip-in, the Sea Elephant Travel Agency and the Bunker Research Group. His multi-referential work consists of photo-installations, collages, videos, objects, and large-scale production such as a life-size truck overloaded with colorful plastic soccer balls, which together express a multi-layered and complex visual language.

“I am not a studio artist” is the most comprehensive exhibition of Alptekin’s works to date, both in Turkey and internationally.

This SALT Interpretation Pack has been designed as a resource for educators and students as they explore the themes of Hrair Sarkissian's "Istory" and Tayfun Serttaş's "Foto Galatasaray" exhibitions at SALT Beyoğlu and SALT Galata in Istanbul, Turkey. Designed for use in high school classrooms, its contents include activities, multimedia resources, terminology and opportunities for discussion. Educators are encouraged to adapt, shape and build upon these materials to best meet the needs of their students and teaching curricula.

The "Foto Galatasaray" project is based on the re-visualization of the complete professional archive of Maryam Şahinyan (Sivas, 1911 – Istanbul, 1996), who worked as a photographer at her studio in Galatasaray, Beyoğlu from 1935-1985. The archive is a unique inventory of the demographic transformations occurring on the socio-cultural map of Istanbul after the declaration of the Republic and the historical period it witnessed; it is also a chronological record of a female Istanbulite studio photographer’s professional career. Consisting entirely of black-and-white and glass negatives, the physical archive of Foto Galatasaray is a rare surviving example of the classical photography studios of Istanbul’s recent past. After Şahinyan left the studio in 1985, the archive was transferred to a storehouse belonging to Yetvart Tomasyan, owner of Aras Publishing. Twenty-five years later, approximately 200,000 negatives in the archive were, over the course of two years, sorted, cleaned, digitized, digitally restored, categorized and protected by a team under the direction of artist/researcher Tayfun Serttaş.

In 2010, Hrair Sarkissian spent two months in
İstanbul documenting the history sections of
various semi-private and public libraries and
archives in the city, from the Archaeological
Museum and Topkapı Palace libraries to the
Atatürk Library in Taksim, the Ottoman Archives
of the Prime Ministry General Directorate of State,
and the Ottoman Bank Archives and Research
Centre. The second exhibition in the "Modern Essays"
series, Sarkissian’s photographs of rows of shelving
caught in time and racks of files that appear rarely
opened - of dark and oppressive spaces shot with
only the light available - express the complexity
of information these archives contain, and their
role in denying or confirming the artist’s inherited
history and existence within the present.

These exercises are originally part of the KLaSS module developed by King's College London Library Services to provide information literacy e-learning to students across our faculties. They were built and developed with Adobe Captivate 9 and published in HTML5 format, suitable for use with Moodle.This set of exercises is designed to show students in the Arts & Humanities how to take a research topic and turn it into a useful and relevant set of search terms they can then use in an academic database to retrieve and view journal articles. ProQuest's Humanities Index was used as the demonstration database.The exercises cover three topics:Using effective search terms - the author describes the process by which you generate key concepts from a focussed research question in order to use them as search termsUsing databases - the author describes the advantages of using databases over other search resources, providing guidance both on how to find King's resources and how to use the search terms within themPractice exercise - the students have the chance to recreate the steps laid out in the previous two exercises in a simulation space designed to familiarise them with the various interfaces being used.This section of KLaSS is comprised of two demonstration exercises, narrated by the author Jane Pothecary, and a practice exercise. The practice exercise is not narrated, but designed to act as a practice run for the student where they click the correct part of the screen to advance through the exercise. The exercises have been published in HTML5 format so they should be compatible with any modern LMS. The authors have only used these files in Moodle 3.0, so cannot offer support for another LMS.
