This course contains five projects, plus a course introduction and course closure, that are organized around the following question: “How can we rethink our use of the world’s resources?” Each project involves investigations of sustainability that help contextualize the content required by the new College Board course framework.

This AP Environmental Science class is intended to meet the same objectives as a first-year college-based course.
However, the method of instruction for this course is unique compared to similar courses because we have adopted
a project-based learning (PBL) approach. Although PBL may take many forms, our approach involves student
investigations and simulations that require students to think like scientists, policymakers, farmers, and other adults
in real-world settings. Teachers engage students in collaborative problem solving, argumentation, and deep
exploration of the concepts and principles of the discipline. The goal for student learning is understanding rather
than relying on rote memory to create meaningful learning and knowledge that is actionable, adaptive, and
transferable.

This assignment helps advanced students to stay connected to the language over the summer. The first document is the assignment with instructions and links. The next two documents are capture sheets for students to use as they complete the work. The documents are in Spanish and the links are to Spanish language sources but everything can be adapted to other languages.

This lesson provides resources about different standards of beauty in two Spanish speaking countries. Students will interpret information from two videos and then use that information to compare and contrast the standards with their own. Links to the two videos are included and the student documents are attached. This aligns with the AP theme of Beauty and Aesthetics and allows students to work in the interpretive and interpersonal modes of communication.

Biology for AP® Courses covers the scope and sequence requirements of a typical two-semester Advanced Placement® biology course. The text provides comprehensive coverage of foundational research and core biology concepts through an evolutionary lens. Biology for AP® Courses was designed to meet and exceed the requirements of the College Board’s AP® Biology framework while allowing significant flexibility for instructors. Each section of the book includes an introduction based on the AP® curriculum and includes rich features that engage students in scientific practice and AP® test preparation; it also highlights careers and research opportunities in biological sciences.

College Physics for AP Courses is designed to engage students in their exploration of physics and help them to relate what they learn in the classroom to their lives and to apply these concepts to the Advanced Placement test. Physics underlies much of what is happening today in other sciences and in technology, therefore the book includes interesting facts and ideas that go beyond the scope of the AP course to further student understanding. The AP Connection in each chapter directs students to the material they should focus on for the AP® exam, and what content — although interesting — is not necessarily part of the AP curriculum.

Students learn about the concepts of the tragedy of the commons and sustainability in the Course Introduction. Project 1 builds on these concepts by having students analyze their family’s ecological footprint using data they collect by auditing their use of various resources. In Global Climate Summit, students are all assigned to be the leaders of specific countries in the world, and they have all been invited to an international environmental summit. Students will research factors in their countries and, using this information, will decide how climate change could affect their country and how their policies could help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Students then run a global climate summit in class to defend their perspectives and ultimately decide who has the responsibility to reduce climate emissions and how it can be accomplished.

In this project, students are all assigned citizen roles on a fictitious island community. Each citizen role has a set of values that they will maintain while the community argues how to recover from its economic decline. Two different industries have proposed to operate from the island, and students debate through a town council meeting, whether to bring one, both, or neither of these industries to the island, and if so, under what conditions.

This dialogue scheme should be used between two students of similar proficiency levels.

Principles of Macroeconomics for AP® Courses 2e covers the scope and sequence requirements for an Advanced Placement® macroeconomics course and is listed on the College Board’s AP® example textbook list. The second edition includes many current examples and recent data from FRED (Federal Reserve Economic Data), which are presented in a politically equitable way. The outcome is a balanced approach to the theory and application of economics concepts.

The second edition was developed with significant feedback from current users. In nearly all chapters, it follows the same basic structure of the first edition. General descriptions of the edits are provided in the preface, and a chapter-by-chapter transition guide is available for instructors.

COERLL has partnered with Rose Potter and Betsy Arnold to publish Recorridos-Don Quijote, a pair of openly-licensed books for the study of Cervantes’ Don Quijote in upper level Spanish courses, including AP. The student workbook, accessible online for free, deepens students’ understanding of the text through reading, pre-reading, and post-reading activities and glosses. The companion teacher support facilitates the teaching of Don Quijote through student-centered strategies and activities, historical and cultural information, quizzes, exams and more.

This activity provides opportunities for students to communicate with each other, in writing, on a given topic in the target language. The teacher provides a question or a topic and students respond to the original question and/or to each other. The attached document "debate silencioso" provides for an extended exchange between two students, following the arrows, as they respond to each other's responses. The other document can be used in groups of four where each student responds to the question and then, at the teacher's direction, the paper is turned a quarter turn so that each student then sees a classmate's response and can respond to his or her comments, ask a follow up question, add on to the comment, etc. As the paper continues to be turned, the students see additional comments from other group mates and thus have more to respond to. This version works best on large newsprint rather than an 8.5 x 11 paper but the document provides a visual for the teacher.

In either version, the idea is to insist on silence so that students are required to express their ideas in writing in the target language.

This lesson is designed to allow advanced students to think about art and then describe it.  Students first look at a work of art, then they think about its characteristics and finally work with classmates to write a description in the form of a "word stack" poem.  (Student descriptions are placed in a stack in the middle of their workspace and then used to write a poem.)  This activity can be used as part of the Beauty and Aesthetics theme in AP Spanish or French.
