This lesson explores the most recent constitutional expansion of voting rights: extending them to people between 18 and 21 years of age. Students will read the 26th Amendment and learn about its history. They will view an NBC report from Nov. 5, 2008, that explains how important the youth vote was to the election of Barack Obama. Finally, they will examine the results of a recent study showing that young voters have very different concerns than older voters, and hypothesize about how young voters might affect elections in 2012 and beyond.

This presentation will look at how the distribution of diabetes is, thus we’ll discuss how the distribution of diabetes are by type, gender, age, geographical region and ethnicity. The purpose of this discussion is to understand how serious a health problem the global epidemic of diabetes is, while increasing the understanding that it’s extremely necessary that we do whatever we can to fight against the diabetes epidemic in the future.

"Statins are the first-line treatment for hypercholesterolemia in patients at high risk for cardiovascular mortality. But some patients require additional LDL cholesterol lowering to reach risk-stratified LDL-cholesterol levels or to further reduce cardiovascular risk. Clinical trials have demonstrated that the PCSK9 inhibitor evolocumab effectively lowers LDL cholesterol and is well tolerated. A new analysis of data from a subset of these trials extends these findings by evaluating LDL cholesterol lowering in patients receiving different evolocumab dosage regimens. Researchers performed a pooled analysis of data from four randomized 12-week phase 3 clinical trials comparing evolocumab to placebo or ezetimibe. Two subcutaneous evolocumab dosage regimens were examined: 140 mg every two weeks, and 420 mg monthly. Patients received evolocumab either as monotherapy or with background lipidlowering therapies, consisting of a statin alone or with ezetimibe..."

"Infection of the knee joint following ACL reconstruction is a rare but serious complication. Past studies have attempted to uncover the risk factors that make certain individuals more susceptible to infection than others. But many of these studies have been limited to small and medium-sized cohorts. A new study reported in the _American Journal of Sports Medicine_ has examined the largest, single-center cohort to date. Findings reveal that graft type, age, and revision surgery could be linked to the risk of infection following ACL reconstruction. The researchers behind the study reviewed more than 11,000 total procedures performed at a single institution between 2010 and 2018. Among these, 48 infections were identified. In addition to infections, the researchers reviewed patient and procedure characteristics associated with infection, infection characteristics, incidence of ACL graft retention and factors associated with retention versus removal of ACL grafts..."

"Housemates, science shows, share more than just space. The types of microbes that colonize the gut tend to be similar among members of the same family or household. But where does the sharing begin: through contact, environment, or diet? And do more social factors like status play a role? To find out, researchers recently examined the microbiomes of seven neighboring groups of wild Verreaux’s sifakas in Madagascar. Sifakas in the same group tended to have more similar microbiomes, but differences between groups weren’t explained by differences in diet, home range, or habitat. Maternal lineage was an important driver of similarity within groups and may also explain why adult group members, which are generally less related, shared the least similar gut microbiota. In addition, dominant males had different microbiomes than their group-mates, possibly because of rank-related differences in physiology and scent-marking behaviors..."

The course explores the interactions between state and market as instigators of China's urbanization, and its consequences of land, housing, transportation, energy, environment, migration, finance, urban inequality. Themes include the de-synchronization of China's urbanization, potential differences between China's past and future development, and differentiators between China's urbanization and those of other countries. This discussion-based course asks students to participate in the conversation with the course instructor and guest lecturers by drawing upon their experiences and academic or professional backgrounds.
