Thinking Critically about Idiomatic Expressions in Spanish - Jason Hank

The purpose of this lesson is to model for students critical thinking strategies necessary to effectively translate seemingly simple, but surprisingly complex phrases from Englsih to Spanish.  Students will use online resources such as Google Translate, Linguee, and WordReference Forums to find and evaluate usages of the phrasal verb “is on” with regards to television and movies “being on”.  While “is on” is only one example of a phrasal verb, the hope of this lesson is that students will begin to think more critically about what they are trying to translate from English to Spanish. It is also hoped that they know what tools to use (and how to use them) in order to assure that they are saying what they want to say accurately with regard to not only grammatical conventions of Spanish, but also with regard to how Spanish is actually spoken by native speakers of different countries and regions.
