Chalk Talk Protocol with Hidden Figures

In this lesson various quotes that are stated by characters in Hidden FIgures are written on chart paper.  Students will use the chalk talk protocol to write explaing their thoughts, connections, and questions about the quote first and then respond to what their classmates have written.  Students will move in small groups from paper to paper guided by a timer. After they have finished, students will discuss big ideas on the chart paper and then discuss and share out how this quote teaches us about the person based on inferences we have made with this activity.  Do we think this what the author intended us to think?  This protocol can be used for any book or topic in many subject areas. There will also be reflection as an informative assessment.

Perspectives in Hidden Figures: Circle of Viewpoints

In this lesson students will examine the characters in a chapter who happen to have differing view points. This is an important factor for success with this lesson. Students will analyze characters and actively express theiir perspectives on different topics and questions.  Students will use their background knowledge, previous learning from the book, and make inferences about the characters. During the "discussion" students use their acting skills to be a partticular character and discuss from that point of view. They will justify the stance they take as they speak in character.  This creates a great understanding of perspective and view points before moving into deeper dives about author's perspectives.

This is an activity that includes student's own ideas and beliefs about the central ideas and important parts of the text. Students will also do a bit of writing to support their opinions. This activity gets at the heart of a text. I see this as introductory to deeper dives into theme. This lesson could be structured to be online or face to face. This is written as a class activity but an online discussion could easily be created after students had followed the protocol a few times and seen the discussion that results. This could easily work in many classrooms through high school.
