This file contains grammar lessons and assignments for a Level 1 academic ESL class with an emphasis on applying grammar lessons in writing. It can be combined with the other files in this folder to create an entire OER based class.

This is a three week lesson covering Present Tense and Present Progressive Tense, using the tenses at a library and at the doctor's office.

Reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities will focus on health care and community and college libraries. Students will review modals and use them to give advice.  

Data Carpentry lesson to understand data structures and common storage and transfer formats for spatial data. The goal of this lesson is to provide an introduction to core geospatial data concepts. It is intended for learners who have no prior experience working with geospatial data, and as a pre-requisite for the R for Raster and Vector Data lesson . This lesson can be taught in approximately 75 minutes and covers the following topics: Introduction to raster and vector data format and attributes Examples of data types commonly stored in raster vs vector format Introduction to categorical vs continuous raster data and multi-layer rasters Introduction to the file types and R packages used in the remainder of this workshop Introduction to coordinate reference systems and the PROJ4 format Overview of commonly used programs and applications for working with geospatial data The Introduction to R for Geospatial Data lesson provides an introduction to the R programming language while the R for Raster and Vector Data lesson provides a more in-depth introduction to visualization (focusing on geospatial data), and working with data structures unique to geospatial data. The R for Raster and Vector Data lesson assumes that learners are already familiar with both geospatial data concepts and the core concepts of the R language.

Because ESL Level 1 students may not all be at the same level, some of the readings may be too difficult for some students. However, the emphasis in these activities is to work on reading strategies for all levels of reading, both at the students' level and above it as well.This module can be combined with the others uploaded about grammar, teaching sentence structure, and writing activities to create an entire OER based ESL class for this level.

These lectures and assignments step ESL students through the process of learning sentence variety which is the key to writing that is both correct, mature, and interesting. Beginning with simple sentences as the foundation allows all students to add more sentence types to their writing in an organized way.This module can be combined with the others uploaded in this folder about reading, grammar, and writing activities to create an entire OER based ESL class for this level.  

Software Carpentry lesson on how to use the shell to navigate the filesystem and write simple loops and scripts. The Unix shell has been around longer than most of its users have been alive. It has survived so long because it’s a power tool that allows people to do complex things with just a few keystrokes. More importantly, it helps them combine existing programs in new ways and automate repetitive tasks so they aren’t typing the same things over and over again. Use of the shell is fundamental to using a wide range of other powerful tools and computing resources (including “high-performance computing” supercomputers). These lessons will start you on a path towards using these resources effectively.

 This module will introduce students to Intermediate Academic English.  Students will review the learning outcomes for the course and course policies. They will send an email to the instructor, write an introductory paragraph, and begin reviewing verb tenses.

World History, Volume 1: to 1500 is designed to meet the scope and sequence of a world history course to 1500 offered at both two-year and four-year institutions. Suitable for both majors and non majors World History, Volume 1: to 1500 introduces students to a global perspective of history couched in an engaging narrative. Concepts and assessments help students think critically about the issues they encounter so they can broaden their perspective of global history. A special effort has been made to introduce and juxtapose people’s experiences of history for a rich and nuanced discussion. Primary source material represents the cultures being discussed from a firsthand perspective whenever possible. World History, Volume 1: to 1500 also includes the work of diverse and underrepresented scholars to ensure a full range of perspectives.
