This lesson spans multiple days. Students will watch three videos about Booker T. Washington in order to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of using a video to present information on Booker T. Washington.
Students will be creating a variety of poetry as well as analyzing poetry. They will work with Language standards and take a performance assessment at the end of the unit.
This a a cross curricular unit encompassing English, History, and Math Common Core Standards to teach the Child Labor practices of 1800s U.S. with the tragedy of Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire of 1911 which lead to child labor reform throughout the world and into the modern era.

8th Grade Historical Literacy consists of two 43 minute class periods. Writing is one 43 minute block and reading is another. The teacher has picked themes based on social studies standards, and a read-aloud novel based on social studies serves as the mentor text for writing and reading skills. More social studies content is addressed in reading through teaching nonfiction reading skills and discussion.

In this problem-based learning module, students will examine various forms of media and the ways that it can influence personal and social behavior. They first will work in stations to examine different types of media and explore what that media is while also addressing how it makes them feel. Afterward, they will work in small groups to create their own influential piece of media which communicates a problem they feel is facing their school.
Understanding the Industrial Revolution can easily be done by reading primary sources relating to the time period. This exercise, however, takes a different approach. Students use images as primary sources to learn more about conditions and work completed by children. By identifying details and making conclusions, students share a lens into the daily lives of people their age in a very different time.
