In this math lesson, learners investigate fractions by playing a game. To play, learners roll two dice and create a fraction, using the larger number rolled as the denominator and the smaller number as the numerator. Learners then build that fractional amount on the game mat with pattern block pieces. The winner is the player who builds the greatest number of hexagons. Less

In this math lesson, learners extend their understanding of basic probability concepts as they learn to name all of the possible outcomes of an event as well as ways to express the likelihood of such an event occurring. Learners use large number cubes and oversized playing cards as they explore ways to express probability. Learners are then actively engaged in a probability experiment where they must collect, organize, display, and interpret data concerning thirty spins on a "mystery spinner." Less

In this math lesson, learners predict and simulate the likelihood of an event occurring. Using an inflatable globe of the earth, learners simulate where a UFO would impact with the surface of the Earth. Will the UFO hit land or water? Learners are encouraged to make predictions based on prior knowledge of the earth's geographical features. Learners toss the globe one hundred times and catch it with open hands. The position of their right index finger represents the landing location of a UFO. Learners then use the data that they've collected to evaluate and make predictions on where a UFO will impact the earth. This lesson can easily be integrated with a language arts unit on mysteries. Ideas for explorations of probability at centers are also included. Less

In this data analysis activity, learners use data collected by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) to study Chilean sea bass populations. Learners formulate catch and catch per unit effort (CPUE) of Dissostichus eleginoides and analyze the trends in these values. Learners also assess the Chilean sea bass population and determine if the population is being overfished. Less

Common Core Math Grade 3 Comparing Fractions

In this lesson, students apply their understanding of fractions to compare two fractions. They use fraction models and number lines to help them reason about the size of unit fractions. Students learn to look carefully at the numerators and denominators of both fractions they are comparing to determine if the numerators or the denominators are the same. If the denominators are the same, the students know the fractions are built from the same size unit fraction and the fraction with the most parts in the numerator is larger. If the numerators are same, then students reason about the size of the unit fractions used to make each of the two fractions. Students apply this understanding to solve problems that involve comparing fractions and explain why one fraction is larger or smaller. Less

In Grade 5, students divided whole numbers by unit fractions. Students continue this understanding in Grade 6 by using visual models and equations to divide whole numbers by fractions and fractions by fractions to solve word problems. In Grade 7, students will continue their work with fractions to include all rational number operations (positive and negative). Students will build on understanding of number lines developed in Grade 6. Aligned with Common Core standard 6.NS.A.1 Less

In Grade 6, students were introduced to ratios and unit rate. They learned to use ratio reasoning to solve problems. Proportional relationships were a major focus in Grade 7. Students learned to compute unit rates that included fractions as well as determine if a relationship is proportional. They represented proportional relationships in graphs, equations, tables, diagrams, and verbal descriptions. In this lesson, students will extend their understanding of proportional relationships to discover that they are one kind of linear function. Aligned with Common Core standard 8.EE.B.5 Less

In this math activity, learners practice comparing fractions. Learners use special cards (included in PDF) to play a card game similar to "War." Players each flip over a card and compare them to see who has the greater fraction. The person with the greater fraction collects that card pair. The object of the game is to collect the most card pairs by the end of the game. Less
