This course prepares students to understand the evolution and function of health insurance, to include Medicare, Medicaid, commercial and managed care. The students will learn to understand, prepare and process claims.

Course Outcomes:
1. Identify types of insurance plans and models of managed care currently deployed in the health related insurance field.
2. Apply third-party insurance guidelines to complete and process insurance claim forms after performing basic mathematical calculations, obtaining exact answers to claims processing functions, and determining whether those answers are reasonable.
3. Communicate results of claims processing using mathematical processes and concepts that demonstrate the following: copay, coinsurance, write-off/discount, primary insurance payment, secondary insurance payment, patient responsibility.
4. Demonstrate competency in applying and utilizing RVU's (relative value units), RBRVS (resource based relative value system) and DRG's (Diagnostic Related Groups).

How do we make schools work for poor citizens? How do we deal with the disease burden? Is micro finance invaluable or overrated? Without property rights, is life destined to be "nasty, brutish and short"? Has globalization been good to the poor? Should we leave economic development to the market? Should we leave economic development to non-governmental organizations (NGOs)? Does foreign aid help or hinder? Where is the best place to intervene?

The International Space Station (ISS) is a uniquely sealed environment, with only the arrival of crewmembers and supplies introducing new microbes. Monitoring the ISS microbiome is important to ensure astronaut health and spacecraft integrity. So, a recent study used samples from two long-term projects, Microbial Tracking 1 and 2, which sampled the same surfaces over two 14-month-long periods. The ISS surface microbiome was dominated by microbes associated with human skin. The most represented groups were Staphylococcus and Malassezia among bacteria and fungi, respectively. Community abundances shifted over time, but did not differ between surfaces. Overall, the metabolism genes tended towards amino acid utilization rather than carbohydrate metabolism..."

My curriculum unit, “Consider the Source: Research Skills for Cell Phone Libraries”, is a unit designed for a fifth-grade regular education English Language Arts class. A common core standard in ELA-writing is to complete a research writing piece that uses three references to support their findings. Many schools are not equipped to provide three sources for each student to use. Either the school library is not properly shelved or there is a lack of chrome books for every student in middle school to have access to on-line resources. It has provided a climate of uncertainty. One option would be to have students research their topics at home. Though their public library card may be invalid, most middle school students own a cell phone. The unit consists of skills to teach students how to use their cell phones for research purposes. By revamping traditional research tools, I hope it will provide a renewed love of investigative research and an enthusiasm to complete writing assignments.

In this lesson, students learn about climate anxiety and create a climate anxiety toolkit.

Step 1 - Inquire: Students discuss statistics about the prevalence of climate anxiety in children and young people and try out a strategy to cope with this anxiety.

Step 2 - Investigate: Students research and practice a strategy to manage anxiety and create a one-page mini-poster about this strategy.

Step 3 - Inspire: Students share their mini-poster with the class, and students discuss what they learned from each other.
