Students will analyze how a portrait reflects the events and trends of its time and then create a portrait of a public female figure today.

Students will compare a painting depicting hatmakers at work to a portrait of a noblewoman of leisure. Next, pupils will write narratives from the perspectives of the women depicted in the paintings and then create a paper hat.

Students will discuss the evolution of women's work from the mid-19th century to the present day and then create an artwork depicting women in contemporary times.

This activity was designed for blind learners, but all types of learners can use it to design a boat (bearing in the mind the properties of matter) that will hold as much weight as possible.

Students participate in a "thirty-second look," followed by a class discussion about Jan Brueghel's painting "The Entry of the Animals into Noah's Ark". Students then use description words and complete sentences to write about their favorite animal in the painting; draw the animal using line, color, and shape; and present their work to the class.

Students will analyze the 20th-century sculpture "Gandydancer's Dream" by Mark di Suvero. They will then use flat shapes and wire to create their own sculpture, which incorporates balance, rhythm, and movement.

Students will view artwork in manuscripts pages depicting insects, animals, plants, flowers, and ornate writing, such as those found in the "Mira calligraphiae monumenta" in the Getty Museum. They will create a work of art that illustrates a figurative saying with a drawing of flora and/or fauna, and text written in ornate script.

In this lesson students will create a Food Foldable to be used as a study guide.

This is a one-hour guided drawing lesson in which students will gain knowledge about composition and line. Students will build a personal drawing vocabulary by experimenting with various tools to create their own unique lines and marks using traditional art media. Students will create two original drawings in a one-hour "en plein air", or outdoor, session.

Students will examine the bust, "Portrait of Nadine Dumas", and create a portrait bust of a friend to give to the friend as a gift. Students will then discuss the modeling techniques used to communicate likeness and expression in a three-dimensional bust portrait.

Students will study the composition of landscape paintings, emphasizing space, depth, and the concepts of foreground, middle ground, and background. Students then create their own landscapes using principles of landscape composition.

Students create a nameplate and an original fairy tale book using an illuminated manuscript format.

Furniture making is in many ways like bridge building, connections holding posts apart with spans to support a deck. Many architects have tried their hand at furniture design, Wright, Mies Van Der Rohe, Aalto, Saarinen, Le Corbusier, and Gerhy.
We will review the history of furniture making in America with a visit to the Decorative Arts Collection at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and have Cambridge artist/craftsman Mitch Ryerson show us his work and talk about design process. Students will learn traditional woodworking techniques beginning with the use of hand tools, power tools and finally woodworking machines.
Students will build a single piece of furniture of an original design that must support someone weighing 185 lbs. sitting on it 12 inches off the ground made primarily of wood. Students should expect to spend approximately 80 hours in the shop outside of class time.
Preregistered architecture students will get first priority but first meeting attendance is mandatory. Twelve student maximum, no exceptions.
