As science extension activities, this book of problems introduces students to mapping the shape of the Milky Way galaxy, and how to identify the various kinds of galaxies in our universe. Students also learn about the shapes and sizes of other galaxies in our universe as they learn how to classify them. The math problems cover basic scientific notation skills and how they apply to working with astronomically large numbers. It also provides exercises in plotting points on a Cartesian plane to map the various features of our Milky Way.

Final examination for a class at MIT covering game theory and its application to economics. The exam is one-hour-and-twenty minutes and intended to be open-book. It has four multi-part free response questions focusing on game theory as a solution to economic questions.

This is a booklet containing 15 problems that incorporate data and information from the Hinode solar observatory. The problems involve math skills such as finding the scale of an image to determine actual physical sizes in images, time calculations, volumes of cylinders, graph analysis, and scientific notation. Learners will use mathematics to explore solar science topics such as sunspot structure, spectroscopy, solar rotation, magnetic fields, density and temperature of hot gases, and solar flares. This classroom activity presents Calculus II students with some Flash tutorials involving work and pumping liquids and a simple question concerning the amount of work involved in pumping water out of two full containers having the same shape and size but different spatial orientations.

What lessons can we learn about genetically engineered organisms from the example of the jabberjay, a fictional bird in the movie “The Hunger Games”? In this lesson, students discuss the definition of genetically modified organisms, learn about the risks and benefits of research on G.M.O.’s, explore the growing do-it-yourself biology movement, and develop proposals seeking to either restrict or permit research into genetically modifying the avian flu virus.

This model-eliciting activity (MEA) challenges students to develop a model for predicting the characteristics of a person who has committed a crime. Students work with real data on shoe length, height, and gender to develop the model. Students write a report to the crime victim that identifies a suspect and justifies their decision. The activity sets the stage for students to learn about regression models, and reinforces their understanding of central tendency and variability. It is suggested that this activity be used prior to a formal introduction to linear relationships.

Students examine data on departure delays for five airlines flying out of the Chicago O'Hare airport. The task is to develop a model to determine which airline has the best chance of departing on time. Students write a report that identifies the best airline and the reasoning behind their decision.

This model-eliciting activity has students determine how to create a fair judging scheme for a paper airplane contest while considering both the most accurate paper airplane and the best floater. Students are given a sample of data that includes multiple flights of paper airplanes by three different pilots. Each team writes a report describing how their judging scheme can be implemented by the judges of the contest. This activity could serve as an introduction to ideas of central tendency and variability. It can also set the stage for understanding the correspondence between data sets and their graphical representations. Alternatively, the activity could be the basis for student introduction to analysis of variance.
