Title:  10 for the Win!Grade: Kindergarten Overall Goal: To have students be able to count by multiples of 10 and comprehend the idea of a sequence of steps involved in a process.  StandardsLearning ObjectiveAssessment5d Students understand how automation works and use algorithmic thinking to develop a sequence of steps to create and test automated solutions. K.NS.1: Count to at least 100 by ones and tens and count on by one from any number.Students will be able to program the beebots to go the correct distance. Students will be able to count to 100 by tens.The students will have to use the beebots to move forward the correct amount of steps. The students will have the squares the beebot travels represent sets of 10.  Key Terms & Definitions: Sequence- certain order in which steps flowSkip counting- skipping numbers while counting, counting by multiples Number line- line which shows number in order, often marked at intervalsProgram- provide machine with coded instructions to perform task  Lesson Introduction (Hook, Grabber): 10 Students will paint hands and stamp them on paper! Each set of hands will represent a set of 10. We will do this all the way up to 100. This paper will be hung in the front of the classroom as a reminder of multiples of 10. Lesson Main:After hanging up our poster with the hands displaying multiples of 10, the teacher would count with the class by 10’s all the way up to 100, while referring to the poster so they can follow along.We will also pass out a number line to the students that highlights 10’s so they have a reference if they struggle.We will make a number line and write multiples of 10 along the side. We will measure out the space between numbers so that it is equal to the length the Beebot travels for each time the button is pushed. For example, if the student wanted to get to 30, they would have to know that you count up by saying “10, 20,30” and they would need to press the forward button on the Beebot 3 times. Each press of the button is a multiple of 10. For this activity, the teacher will break up the students into small groups and they will work together. They will draw a card which will have a multiple of 10 on it ranging from 10-100. The students will have to decide how many 10’s it takes to count up to that number, as well as how many times they will need to program the Beebot to reach the answer on the number line.   Lesson Ending:For the lesson ending, we will regroup as a class and talk about how we felt the Beebot activity went. Then we will count together by 10’s up to 100 again to reiterate what we have been learning. Lastly, we will pass out a worksheet to the students which we have included a link to under our resources, and have them complete it individually. We could also offer an alternative activity for the Beebot timeline where we made the timeline go up by smaller multiples. For the worksheet, they could receive a longer amount of time to work on it and have directions read to them/receive help as needed.        Differentiation for access & resourcesIf the school had limited resources and did not have access to these robots, they could use other tools like toy cars or something they could use to roll to the spots on the timeline. The game could be altered to fit a large variety of resources. The worksheet we used was found online but a similar version could be created by the teacher. Anticipated Difficulties: Some students might struggle with the concept of skip counting. It may be hard at first for them to remember the multiples of 10. Hopefully by making a poster and providing them with their own number line for reference, this will eliminate some potential difficulties the students may have.

1869: A Report on Schools in North Carolina

In this lesson, students use a guided reading to look at a report on the status of education in North Carolina in 1869, and discuss the reasons given then for why the Governor and Legislature should support educating North Carolina's children. They are provided an opportunity to compare and contrast the 1869 document against their own ideas about the civic duty to attend school through age sixteen, and its relative value to the state and the country.

1897 Petition Against the Annexation of Hawaii

This site recounts the struggle for control of Hawaii between native Hawaiians and American business interests in the late 1800s. This 1897 petition and a lobbying effort by native Hawaiians convinced the U.S. Congress not to annex the islands. But months later the U.S.S. Maine exploded in Havana and the Spanish-American War began. The U.S. needed a mid-Pacific fueling station and naval base.

To better understand the United States at the end of the nineteenth century, this interdisciplinary lesson integrates analyzing historical primary resources with literary analysis. Students work in groups and express themselves creatively through a multi-media epic poem. The artistic models for the students' multi-media epic poem are Walt Whitman's Song of Myself (1855) and Hart Crane's The Bridge (1930). These epic poets capture, interpret, and give meaning to their particular times and places. Students look to do the same with the year 1900, relying upon relevant primary resources -- sound recordings, images, text, and their own creative and interpretative voices.

This resource contains presentations from one of the Center for Automotive Research's (CAR's) breakfast briefings titled "Automotive Fuels and Emissions: Policies, Compliance, & Potential Impact of Future Technologies." This briefing occurred on 12/5/13 at Robert Bosch LLC in Farmington Hills, MI. At the briefing presenters discussed the strategic implications of Tier 3 regulations which will soon be finalized and may impact future technology decisions in a multitude of ways. The impact of Tier 3 emission regulations is expected to be far reaching as they have the potential to influence the quality of fuel, as well as usage of alternative fuels and powertrains. Further, the regulations will have a direct influence on the technologies, such as diesel and gasoline direct injection, that automakers will utilize to meet the fuel economy standards through MY2025. Included in this resource are the presentations from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Volkswagen, and Bosch utilized at the briefing.

This lesson explores the most recent constitutional expansion of voting rights: extending them to people between 18 and 21 years of age. Students will read the 26th Amendment and learn about its history. They will view an NBC report from Nov. 5, 2008, that explains how important the youth vote was to the election of Barack Obama. Finally, they will examine the results of a recent study showing that young voters have very different concerns than older voters, and hypothesize about how young voters might affect elections in 2012 and beyond.

Lesson Plan – Math Lesson Plan: Learning to Count Change 2nd grade Activity: Learning to count change: penny, nickel, dime, quarter Grade: 2nd grade Concepts: Teach the students how to recognize change and count using pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters up to a dollar. National Standards: Math- MA 2.2.5.a. Count mixed coins to $1.00 Objectives: the objective is that the students learn how to recognize and distinguish between different American currency using change: pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. Criteria: The student must be able to provide evidence and knowledge of the behavior and the student is expected to learn how to count change (penny, nickel, dime, quarter) up to a dollar will a high accuracy. Multiple Intelligences: The lesson accounts for auditory, visual, and kinetic learners by having the students participate in many different strategic learning activities. Essential Question(s):1.    How can learning to count change help you inside the classroom as well as outside   the classroom?2.    Why is learning to count change important?3.    How can we use counting change in our everyday lives? Ask for examples.4.    Is learning to count money and change useful to you? Conditions:The behavior should be performed within as open class discussion before moving into individual work. Students should be relaxed, engaged, and motivated to learn. Instructional Objectives: The students should be active participants while performing the behavior. Motivation: Making math fun! Incorporating something special to help them count change. Jelly beans, popcorn, (some kind of treat). Explaining how counting can be useful in everyday life. They each will earn a chocolate coin during their formative assessment. Connection to Learning:Prior knowledge would be skip-counting and counting to 100. Work on the song together as a class.6.     Let the class know we are going to play a little game about making change after the video.7.      Watch the video a second time and have the students sing along.8.     Introduce the class activity: Race to a Dollar game9.      Explain the rules to the game and how the winner gets a reward. (You can play the game anyway you would like).10.    Once the game is over and the teacher feels comfortable that the class understood the lesson, pass out and explain the directions for the first or second worksheet.11.     Explain the instruction and dismiss the class to work independently. This is a great time to walk about and formally assess the students independently.12.     Hand out the second worksheet for homework.13.     Explain that we will continue to build on this lesson in the days to follow.14.    A summative assessment will be given at the end of the week. Assessment:Formative assessment - Worksheet: Coins! The teacher will walk around and ask every student individually a questions about change in order to “buy” a chocolate wrapped quarter.  Ex: In order to “buy” this candy from me how can you use different coins to make 30 cents. The student answers: 3 dimes. The teacher will help each student through the question and assess their current knowledge.Summative assessment - quiz on the lesson, how to count change focusing on (pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.)   Accommodations/Accommodations for special needs child:Teacher will allow for one on one instruction time once the class has been dismissed to work independently.
