This unit gives a historical background to mathematics education in South Africa, to outcomes-based education and to the national curriculum statement for mathematics. The traditional approach to teaching mathematics is then contrasted with an approach to teaching mathematics that focuses on íîdoing mathematics, and mathematics as a science of pattern and order, in which learners actively explore mathematical ideas in a conducive classroom environment.

The Adoption of Open Educational Resources by One Community College Math Department
Conditions of Use:

Rating

The high cost of textbooks is of concern not only to college students but also to society as a whole. Open textbooks promise the same educational benefits as traditional textbooks; however, their efficacy remains largely untested. We report on one community college’s adoption of a collection of open resources across five different mathematics classes. During the 2012 fall semester, 2,043 students in five different courses used these open access resources. We present a comparison between the previous two years in terms of the number of students who withdrew from the courses and the number that completed the courses with a C grade or better. Our analysis suggests that while there was likely no change in these educational outcomes, students who have access to open access materials collectively saved a significant amount of money. Students and faculty were surveyed as to their perceptions of these materials and the results were generally favorable.

Sustainability is not so much about ongoing grant funding but about baking this into the regular daily operations of an institution.” This segment tells a story of a highly successful Open Textbook project in British Columbia, Canada and how the project sustained momentum and funding. Stacey and Burgess, former and current Directors of Open Education at BCcampus first discuss the history of the Open Texbook Project and illustrate the key elements that influenced the initiative’s early success. One of the key elements they identify is their continuous data collection effort around student access and student affordability. They also discuss the recent growth in the adoption of OER and report that there have been 103 open textbooks in the BC collection. In discussing sustainability and capacity building across the system, they point out that sustainability is not so much about ongoing grant funding but about integrating this into the regular daily ...

As Conewago Valley School District advances its open educational resource (OER) adoption and implementation plan, Leveraging its teaching and learning network and digital library, OER Commons (oercommons.org) launched in 2007.

This is the first of three custom module trainings that will provide participants with an introduction to OER practice and the value add, highlighting successful state and district use cases. Followed by a demonstration and discussion of how to navigate OER Commons and create collaborative workflows to identify resources, assess their quality using rubrics, and organize materials for use. Participants will get an opportunity to practice using OER tools and begin to design their plans for OER implementation, specific to their immediate OER needs. An important outcome for educators will be a shared understanding of OER practice and specific next steps for OER adoption in their work.

We have designed these modules to first spark the learner's interest in the topics covered and then dig deeper into the content through presentations, storytelling, and demonstrations of the tools. We will offer opportunities for learners to practice exploring the resources and tools, and reflect on how they might use them in their work.

CSE 624: Internet for Educators Reading & Resource List
Conditions of Use:

Materials below are selected for a graduate level course, CSE 624: Internet for Educators. The course is intended for MS: Education students who require a course that gives them an overview of diverse, and primarily web-based, technologies. A second goal is to offer hands on experience working with web technologies and curating content directly relevant to graduates’ teaching/learning environments. Additionally, this course is meant to help address a sore point for many educators: understanding copyright and related issues. Thus determining which resources (books, movies, videos, etc.) they can use, as well as learning about alternative sources of content and resources, are key components of this course.

Since different people teach this course, this collection of resources is meant to suggest a set of common resources for faculty to integrate into their courses while allowing them to personalize themes and emphases. Hopefully, faculty will also add materials to this content as well.

Ciensación
Conditions of Use:
