The Early Literacy Journey: Supporting and Celebrating Young Learners

Rating

"The Early Literacy Journey: Supporting and Celebrating Young Learners" provides an overview of language and literacy development in the early years, from birth through preschool. It examines the critical role that these years play in the emergence of literacy. All aspects of this area of development, reading, writing, speaking, and listening are explored and considered. This text was adapted from an OER text, "Early Childhood Literacy: Engaging and Empowering Emergent Readers and Writers, Birth-Age 5," written by Schull, C., La Croix, L., Miller, S., Austin, K., Kidd, J.

This adaptation focused on creating and enhancing OER materials for courses in Early Childhood Language and Literacy. The intent was seen as a cost saving measure as well as to reflect the diverse culture of our college community. Diverse perspectives are apparent throughout the text with the inclusion of vignettes, photos, related websites, videos, and application activities.

The text begins with an overview of emergent literacy and the critical role that the early years play in the development of literacy. Theories are examined and developmentally appropriate practices are explored. The importance of valuing and understanding the family and the part they play in early language and literacy is emphasized. All aspects of literacy, including reading, writing, speaking, and listening are introduced and considered.

Early literacy: Promote children's early language and communication skills

The Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) defines literacy as ‛the capacity, confidence and disposition to use language in all its forms’. It can include talking, listening, viewing, reading, writing, music, movement, dance, storytelling, visual arts, media and drama. Children develop a wide range of literacy skills in the early years, from infancy through to the start of school, which form the foundation for reading, writing and communicating. Early literacy approaches aim to promote the development of these foundational skills.
Evidence-based practices for promoting early literacy in early childhood care and education settings are listed. Some of the examples offered may not apply in all contexts and/or may be more suitable for particular learners or age groups.
