In this unit, students will take a look at the historical vision of the American Dream as put together by our Founding Fathers. They will be asked: How, if at all, has this dream changed? Is this dream your dream? First students will participate in an American Dream Convention, acting as a particular historical figure arguing for his or her vision of the American Dream, and then they will write an argument laying out and defending their personal view of what the American Dream should be.

BENCHMARK ASSESSMENT: Cold Read

During this unit, on a day of your choosing, we recommend you administer a Cold Read to assess students’ reading comprehension. For this assessment, students read a text they have never seen before and then respond to multiple-choice and constructed-response questions. The assessment is not included in this course materials.

In this lesson, students will get into character and introduce themselves to the others who will be at the convention.

In this lesson, students will begin to work in groups to read their document closely, discovering what the main message is.

The 12th grade learning experience consists of 7 mostly month-long units aligned to the Common Core State Standards, with available course material for teachers and students easily accessible online. Over the course of the year there is a steady progression in text complexity levels, sophistication of writing tasks, speaking and listening activities, and increased opportunities for independent and collaborative work. Rubrics and student models accompany many writing assignments.Throughout the 12th grade year, in addition to the Common Read texts that the whole class reads together, students each select an Independent Reading book and engage with peers in group Book Talks. Language study is embedded in every 12th grade unit as students use annotation to closely review aspects of each text. Teacher resources provide additional materials to support each unit.

Who decides who among us is civilized? What rules should govern immigration into the United States? Whom should we let in? Keep out? What should we do about political refugees or children without papers? What if they would be a drain on our economy?

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Students read William Shakespeare’s play The Tempest and write a short argument about who in the play is truly civilized.
Students participate in a mock trial in which they argue for or against granting asylum to a teenage refugee, and then they write arguments in favor of granting asylum to one refugee and against granting it to another.
Students read an Independent Reading text and write an informational essay about a global issue and how that relates to their book.

What role do national identity, custom, religion, and other locally held beliefs play in a world increasingly characterized by globalization?
How does Shakespeare’s view of human rights compare with that in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights?
Who is civilized? Who decides what civilization is or how it’s defined?
How do we behave toward and acknowledge those whose culture is different from our own?

Which character in The Tempest has been treated most unfairly? In this lesson, students will continue that discussion. Then they’ll share their annotation of the O’Toole essay and write about whether technology can be used to “suppress and subjugate.” Students will also plan for their “Who Is Civilized?” essay.

"EVALUATION, VALUES, ENHANCEMENT"The Project involved 2 general education high schools, the Italian coordinator, and a Finnish partner: both have improved the quality of their provisions for learners through on-site (six) and virtual mobilities (two) for pupils and staff, increasing their ability to work in the framework of international projects. It has directly involved 100 people.The Project offered the opportunity:to reinforce the relevance of cooperation in an international context;to raise awareness of European citizenship and values;to share good practices.

This is a text-based STEM Inquiry, focusing on the mathematical standard of making inferences and justifying conclusions while evaluating reports based on data. The unit culminates in students presenting their findings comparing local to national data regarding the relationships between educational attainment and financial earnings.

This curriculum, which can be used in whole or in part, provides background legislative initiatives, evaluations of Family Preservation/Support Programs in different areas of the country, and techniques in evaluating community-based programs. Students use the 5 Ws (who, what, when, where, why, and how) to evaluate an information source and determine if they would cite it in a paper. This assignment is used as an information literacy exercise at the University of Tennessee Libraries, where students are given a New York Times column to read before completing the assignment in groups.

Students will use this website to learn more about the CRAAP Test and how to use it to evaluate websites.  Then, they will watch this video as a review.  Finally, they will complete an activity in which they find and evaluate two websites, one good and one bad.   

In this lesson, students will create evaluation criteria that they can use to determine the quality of a source.

A diagnostic test is an objective method of deciding whether an animal has a disease, or not. Decisions made following diagnostic testing are usually dichotomous e.g. treat or do not treat the animal, therefore diagnostic tests are usually interpreted as dichotomous outcomes (diseased or non-diseased). In this case, if a diagnostic test is measuring a continuous outcome e.g. antibody titre then a cut-off for classifying animal’s as positive or negative must be selected. The figure below shows that whereever the cut-off is selected there is usually some overlap between results i.e. some diseased animals will have the same value as non-diseased animals and resulting in some false-positive and false-negative results.

This practicum subject integrates theory and practice through the design, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive community information infrastructure that promotes democratic involvement and informs community development projects. Students work with Lawrence Community Works, Inc. to involve constituents and generate solutions to an important planning problem in the City of Lawrence, Massachusetts. Final project presentations take place in a public forum, and serve to inform future development of the information infrastructure. Subject begins with an overview of the digital divide, e-government, public participation GIS, and neighborhood information systems. Subject includes a reflection component and a deliberate investigation of race, class, and gender dynamics.
