In this lesson, students chorally read the story and then point out familiar color words or sight words that appear in the story. After finishing the story, students are introduced to four different literacy center activities that include participating in a read along, building word families with story words, playing a memory game with color words from the story, and retelling story events using sentence strips. In the sessions that follow, students create their own artwork of the big green monster and use that artwork to help them write a story. Students use both self- and peer-editing to improve their writing. Completed stories are either published on the Internet or in a class book.
There is great need to understand individuals' functional language abilities, not only in education but in commerce and public policy discussion. The aim is to quantify language use patterns, proficiency, and dominance in the two languages of bilinguals. The Bilingual Language Profile (BLP) is an instrument for assessing language dominance through self-reports that is concise, quick, and easy to use. The BLP is intended to produce a continuous dominance score and a general bilingual profile taking into account a variety of linguistic variables. The BLP is an open and free assessment tool for researchers, educators, and anyone with an interest in assessing language dominance.
The Book Cover Creator is designed to allow users to type and illustrate front book covers, front and back covers, and full dust jackets. Students can use the tool to create new covers for books that they read as well as to create covers for books they write individually or as a class.
This kit provides teachers and other educators with the materials and guidance to help fourth grade students understand the reasons that the British colonists elected to declare their independence from King George III between the years 1763-1776. As a part of these lessons students will be encouraged to consider the intent and impact of media documents from a variety of points of view including those of the colonists, King George, patriots, loyalists, slaves and Native Americans.

This paper discusses the affordances and challenges of bilingual instruction programs in light of the new Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards. The authors argue that bilingual education has an important role to play because it has always placed language and literacy development at the core of instruction. Bilingual education that is high quality and that promotes full development of two languages leverages the native language of students in service of better English. It also provides an ideal context in which to address the demands content and language demands of the New Standards by allowing students to use all their language and cultural resources.
The goal of the Listening and Learning Strand is for students to acquire language competence through listening, specifically building a rich vocabulary, and broad knowledge in history and science by being exposed to carefully selected, sequenced, and coherent read-alouds. The 9 units (or domains) provide lessons (including images and texts), as well as instructional objectives, core vocabulary, and assessment materials. The domain topics include: Different Lands, Similar Stories; Fables and Stories; The Human Body; Early World Civilizations; Early American Civilizations; Astronomy; Animals & Habitats; Fairy Tales; and History of the Earth.
When I first heard Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton I was, like everyone else, immediately blown away by its combination of music, history, emotion and empowerment. My second reaction is one only teachers can relate to: asking “How can I use this in my teaching?” I’ve been working on this project since 2015. Thanks to a grant from Open Oregon, I’ve been able to improve my materials and create a workbook that I hope will let others access this incredible musical.
The workbook is designed to be used over a 10-week college communication course. It is designed to cover academic listening, pronunciation, and public speaking, using a thematic approach tied to the musical Hamilton. Ideally, students would access the workbook in print form, as it is meant to be an interactive “notebook” which will be filled with notes by the end of term.
The Comparison and Contrast Guide outlines the characteristics of the genre and provides direct instruction on the methods of organizing, gathering ideas, and writing comparison and contrast essays.
Using Construct-a-Word, students learn letter-sound correspondence by combining a beginning letter or blend to a word ending to create words.
This paper argues that the heightened expectations around language in the new standards pose major challenges for all students who engage with rich academic content, especially English Language Learners (ELLs). The authors make five policy recommendations designed to give ELLs the educational supports necessary to meet the new higher standards.
This lesson introduces the concept of cause and effect with Trinka Hakes Noble's books about Jimmy and his boa constrictor. Each lesson begins with the teacher reading a new story about Jimmy and his boa and the chaos they bring to each place they visit. Class discussions about each event and its cause are followed by tasks for the students to help illustrate understanding of the concept. Students create cause-and-effect pictures, puzzles, and flow charts as they explore the genre. As a culminating activity, students write their own book with causes and effects, which are assessed with a rubric.

We created this site to share the lesson plans and other materials that we use in this Listening/Speaking Level F class with other ESL teachers -- click around and use what works for you! This is a 10-week course at LCC, but you can pick and choose from the 8 chapters for a shorter or longer term. The chapters can be covered in any order.
Lane Community College's Intensive English Language Program offers 6 levels (A=beginner, F=college transition). This site was designed for Listening/Speaking Level F, which is a class that teaches listening and note-taking strategies focused especially on lecture listening, as well as presentation, pronunciation, conversation, and academic discussion skills.
LCC ESL Students in Level F take three separate intensive classes (Writing, Listening/Speaking, and Reading for a total of 20 in-class contact hours per week). Prior to the re-imagining of this class and the creation of this site, each Level F class had a different textbook with different thematic progressions. Students experienced cognitive overload with the demand to learn the vocabulary, concepts, and skills of the three separate classes. In addition, students in our department are often from marginalized backgrounds and can find it financially difficult to purchase the three separate textbooks.
In order to lessen students' financial and cognitive burdens and create more connections between the three classes, we used the topics from the Reading textbook (Academic Encounters Level 4: Reading and Writing, 2nd edition, Cambridge 2014) to find freely-available authentic videos or recorded audio for the Listening/Speaking class.
Over the past year, students have expressed appreciation for the reduced cost of taking the course. In addition, they have shown increased interest and engagement in the course due to the authentic, real-life materials and complementary nature of the three Level F classes.

The Essay Map is an interactive graphic organizer that enables students to organize and outline their ideas for an informational, definitional, or descriptive essay.
Pairs of students respond to literature alternately in shared journals. Mini-lessons are presented on responding to prompts, creating dialogue, adding drawings, and asking and answering questions.
Students explore the nature and structure of expository texts that focusing on cause and effect and apply what they learned using graphic organizers and writing paragraphs to outline cause-and-effect relationships.
The activity includes a series of exercises, in which students view the literal representations of idioms and then examine the metaphorical meanings of the idioms.
Fact Fragment Frenzy provides elementary students with an online model for finding facts in nonfiction text, then invites students to find facts in five sample passages.
The Flip-a-Chip activity provides hands-on practice with affixes and roots, and also promotes comprehension through structural analysis and vocabulary in context.
Students learn about what life was like in Colonial America. They go on to study the many roles people played in a colonial settlement and how necessary their interdependence was for survival. Students select one role to explore more deeply through various forms of nonfiction texts. With an emphasis on making inferences, summarizing informational text, basic research (note-taking and pulling together information from a variety of texts), this module will foster students’ abilities to synthesize information from multiple sources and integrate research into their writing. At the end of the module, students participate in several critique experiences during the revision process as they write a research-based narrative that vividly describes an event in a colonist’s life.
The Graphic Map assists teachers and students in reading and writing activities by charting the high and low points related to a particular item or group of items, such as events during a day or chapters in a book.
