The goal of this textbook is to give teachers the knowledge necessary for deciding if, where and how AI can help.
• How can artificial intelligence impact learning and teaching in my classroom?
• Can it help me do what I want to do with my students?
• How can it change the dynamics and interactions I have with my students?
• How do I even know when it is being used correctly or incorrectly?
• And, what should I be aware of if I want to put it to good use?

Best Practices in Accessible Online Design

Accessibility is frequently the last thing course and website developers want to think about when creating an online content. There is extra time involved up front, but it can help prevent problems down the line. I think most of us in higher education care about all students and want to help them to our best ability. There are also laws protecting the rights of individuals with disabilities to have access to programs and services that institutions of higher education offer. Section 504 of The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 says that public institutions receiving federal funds, this includes student financial aid, need to ensure that people with disabilities can participate in programs & activities and have the same benefits that people without disabilities have. It requires academic adjustments and accommodation to ensure full participation. Section 508 is an amendment that requires electronic information and technology, such as websites and online courses be accessible. The American with Disabilities Act of 1990 expands the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 to private as well as public institutions of higher education. The newest is The 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act of 2010. It requires modern communications to be accessible to people with disabilities. This includes VOIP services, electronic messaging, video conferencing, video communications and mobile browsers.

Long Description:
Digital Privacy: Leadership and Policy is an e-book companion to the online course of the same name. Situated in the context of education, the authors explore how policies in school systems and regulatory bodies are needed to match the contingencies created by technological advances. With the power of technology to document many aspects of everyday life, there is a pressing need to manage how much personal information is available to corporate entities. Building on current events, the authors outline some of the risks with ubiquitous surveillance and data capture, which threaten personal choice, reputation and online identity. Student readers are encouraged to think deeply about the implications for society when personal choices for information are curated to their preferences. This book also contains digital privacy case studies developed by graduate students and shared for teaching and learning purposes.

Giving Learners a Premier Learning Experience No Matter Where

Online learning and teaching have been a part of CSI for many years. To give just one example from one discipline, in the 1990s, Jeff Fox and Ken Bingham cobbled together various digital tools to allow students to access instruction, discussions, feedback, readings, and more. Long before Canvas, Moodle, or any other LMS (learning management system), when email was still a relative novelty, Jeff and Ken and other forward-looking instructors were harnessing the power of the web to reach and teach CSI’s students.

The Online Learning Committee of the college is the latest iteration of an institutional effort to improve online education that has been around nearly as long as online teaching. Long-time employees will remember the E-Learning Committee, and similar groups comprised of faculty, staff, support folks, and students working to make online learning as good as it can be.

This text is the latest in a long line of initiatives intended to regularize a level of instructional excellence at CSI. In fact, we hope this text will give you the resources you need to be the best online teacher you can be and continue to build CSI’s reputation as a leading and innovative institution in Idaho.

The text provides four areas of focus for you to consider. CONTENT | COURSE DESIGN | FEEDBACK | and CONNECTIONS. We believe that almost any measure of engaged, exemplary online instruction can be found in one of these “buckets.”

Within these categories, we have identified just three items (for now) for your consideration as you tackle the taxing work of teaching online. Let’s call these “essential practices.” Read on to see what these practices are and to see some examples of their implementation.

“Engaged” and “exemplary” practices will be published later.

A Practical Resource for Educators and Instructional Designers

Short Description:
Everyday Instructional Design works through the online course or module development process, exploring the rationale and pragmatics of all of the steps involved with determining what needs to be developed, creating design plans, developing a prototype, pilot testing with a “live” student audience, reflecting on feedback, and determining how we can tweak our designs to create the best possible online teaching and learning experience.

Long Description:
Everday Instructional Design: A Practical Resource for Educators and Instructional Designers provides useful background understanding of the principles and processes that guide the design, development, testing, and refinement of online course modules. This book has been developed based on a series of instructional design and educational technology courses taught by Rob Power at different Canadian universities, and follows a project-based learning experience that walks participants through the first few weeks of an instructional design and development project. These steps typically span the first six to eight weeks of designing and developing online courses as a contract instructional designer or as an in-house ID specialist. Everyday Instructional Design works through this process, exploring the rationale and pragmatics of all of the steps involved with determining what needs to be developed, creating our initial design plans, developing a prototype of a selected portion of the larger ID project, collaborating with other instructional designers to get “expert feedback” on our works-in-progress, pilot testing our prototypes with a “live” student audience, reflecting on the expert and student feedback we receive, and determining how we can tweak our prototype designs before proceeding with the rest of the course development project.

The purpose of this text is to provide students with an introduction to the field of Instructional Design and building upon skills that will help the novice designer become more effective in their professional career. This text will go beyond theory to discuss such topics as recommended skillsets and traits for designers, the importance of cultivating strong communication and leadership skills and how to incorporate emotional intelligence into your wheelhouse of professional skills. In addition, tips on the management of projects as well as the instructional design process will be discussed. In an effort to broaden the concept of the instructional design profession, you will find sections devoted to instructional design in various professional venues, (i.e., consulting, educational {higher education and K-12}).

In the educational realm of instructional design, one current topic among designers is how to incorporate openly licensed material into instructional texts. We will provide a section on open educational resources and licensing to assist you in becoming knowledgeable on best practices and dealing with cutting edge initiatives in the educational world.

Effective instructional designers should be able to speak comfortably in public in various venues whether it is a business meeting, training a small group of individuals, or, presenting at a large conference. For an instructional designer, it is important to hone these leadership skills and prepare yourself for the inevitable public speaking situation. This text will provide information on how to improve upon your public speaking skills.
