In this activity (on pages 10-17), learners discover how scientists study biodiversity and the health of the environment based on inspection of small areasäóîa process known as sampling. Learners predict the living things they might find in a small area, then use a tool called a "linear transect," which is a line placed on the ground to measure the location and number of plants or animals in that area. Learners collect real data, compare their data to their predictions, and explore what their findings show about the biodiversity of their area. This activity could be used at a school site, a protected natural area, or even a back yard. (less)

In this activity, learners are invited to imagine the park of their dreams! In small groups, learners place moveable pieces on a grid, iterating on their plan together to create a plan for a community park. A variety of park features are offered as choices to include on the map, including a playground, skate park, water features, picnic areas, trails, and more. Like real-world projects, the plan is limited by the realities of space and funds. For younger learners, groups are limited to choosing less than 10 features. Learners ages 9 and up are limited not by the number of features, but by their cost in terms of points: They are challenged to keep track of the points on the park features cards and use less than 250 total points. Some park features, including a natural wetland and ice cream shop, promise to provide revenue back to the community and are worth points. Others, like a skate park or swimming pool, "cost" points. This activity is part of a curriculum designed to engage learners in hands-on engineering challenges. (less)

In this activity (on pages 36-39), learners make a model of a watershed out of paper, then run water down the mountain to simulate how rainfall and pollution affect watersheds. Learners are introduced to the ABCs of runoffäóîhow agricultural runoff, bulldozers, chemicals and human debris impact lakes, streams and rivers in urban as well as suburban areas. Water-soluble colored markers are used to represent rivers and these pollution sources. The "Think It Over" section at the end encourages learners to reflect on what they wash down their drains at home. (less)

This site is based at Reading Memorial High School in Reading, MA. It features general information defining and describing vernal pools as a habitat type, including an illustrated cartoon series. Resources for educators and students include suggestions for classroom and field trip activities, examples of school projects, field guides, and teacher resources such as workshops. While this site contains several references to state-specific resources and regulations, it is relevant and useful outside of Massachusetts wherever vernal pools are found. The teacher responsible for the text on this site spent a sabbatical developing a resource kit for educators, which is available for purchase. Links are provided to scientific researchers conducting vernal pool studies, including their methods and results. There is an extensive page of resources, both digital in print. Educators and students are encouraged to download and use the collection of 78 slides of vernal pools and associated species on this site. (less)

In this fun and in depth hands-on experiment, learners test various liquid samples (distilled water, lemon juice, vinegar, and baking soda mixed with water) to determine their pH levels and identify each sample as either acid, base or neutral chemical. Then, over the course of several weeks, learners perform a number of tests and observe the affects of pH level on plants. The wrap up section of this activity discusses acid rain and its dramatic impact on aquatic animals, and tips for going further. (less)

Groups of learners will work in pairs or small groups and conduct a bioblitz of a wetland, carefully observing, identifying and recording a list of as many plant and animal species as they can find. In part 1, learners make it "rain" on their wetland model and compare their predictions of where the water will go to where it actually goes. In part 2, learners consider and discuss the characteristics of wetland plants and animals and match pictures of different organisms to different types of wetlands. Peat forms when plant material is inhibited from full decomposition by acidic and anaerobic conditions. The development and expansion of northern peatlands after glacial retreats thousands of years ago has strongly influenced the global carbon cycle because it has transferred large amounts of carbon from the atmosphere to soils. At present, however, peatlands are a significant source of atmospheric carbon through methane emission and the export of dissolved organic carbon to oceans. This photograph originally appeared on the cover of Ecological Monographs (76:3) in August of 2006. (less)
