This web page contains a set of more than 40 simple experiments, or "snacks", on the topic of light. Exploratorium Science Snacks are miniature versions of popular exhibits at the Exploratorium museum that can easily performed by students in the classroom. All materials are readily available and inexpensive. In this section, look for activities on polarized light, pinhole optics, light diffraction, lenses, light scattering, absorption and emission, Moire patterns, and more. This resource is part of a larger collection of "Snacks" developed under the direction of the Exploratorium Museum in San Francisco. SEE RELATED ITEMS ON THIS PAGE for a link to the full set of Exploratorium Snacks listed by subject. # Lens (thick lens) and mirror

This applet allows the user to make a lens or a mirror ... (more)

This applet allows the user to make a lens or a mirror and observe its effect on distant light. The user can change the thickness, the curvatures, the diameter, the index of refraction of the lens, and the index of refraction of the surrounding medium. Several special cases are pre-programmed and can be invoked by clicking on a link. (less)

# Real Lens Effect

This simulation allows the user to observe various real images through lenses. ... (more)

This simulation allows the user to observe various real images through lenses. The user can change the index of refraction of the lens, the ratio of its thickness to its radius, and its overall shape. This is a part of the "Learn Physics using Java" library of simulations. (less)

# Thick Lens Model

The EJS Thick Lens model allows the user to simulate a lens ... (more)

The EJS Thick Lens model allows the user to simulate a lens (mirror) by adjusting the physical properties of a transparent (reflecting) object and observing the object's effect on a beam of light. The user can adjust the concavity of the sides, the index of refraction and its environment, and the height and width of the object as well as the size of the incident light and the horizontal position of the transparent object. Spherical aberration can be observed at large angles. You can examine and modify this simulation if you have EJS installed by right-clicking within the plot and selecting "Open EJS Model" from the pop-up menu item. (less)
