ACE School Management and Leadership: Managing teaching and learning (Word)

This module is about the management of teaching and learning. We begin by exploring the school as a learning organization and promoting a culture of learning and teaching, which is dedicated to constant renewal and improvement. We will also tackle the issue of context, and will look at the ways in which the physical environment of the school impacts on the quality of learning. This leads us into an exploration of the challenges of effectively planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating a curriculum that needs constantly to change and reinvent itself in line with the changing needs of a changing society. In particular, we focus on what is required to improve teaching and learning in order to produce enhanced learner outcomes. This paves the way for the identification and development of the skills and processes needed to lead and manage effective teaching and learning.

This lesson is about trying to get students to make connections between ideas about equations, inequalities, and expressions. The lesson is designed to give students opportunities to use mathematical vocabulary for a purpose to describe, discuss, and work with these symbol strings. The idea is for students to start gathering global information by looking at the whole number string rather than thinking only about individual procedures or steps. Hopefully students will begin to see the symbol strings as mathematical objects with their own unique set of attributes. (7th Grade Math)

This lesson is based on the results of a performance task in which we realized that students' understanding of area and perimeter was mostly procedural. Therefore the purpose of this re-engagement lesson was to address student misconceptions and deepen student understanding of area and perimeter. The standards addressed in this lesson involve finding perimeter and area of various shapes, finding the perimeter when given a fixed area, and using a formula in a practical context. Challenges for our students included decoding the language in the problem and proving their thinking. (7th Grade Math)

The foundation of this lesson is constructing, communicating, and evaluating student-generated tables while making comparisons between three different financial plans. Students are given three different DVD rental plans and asked to analyze each one to see if they could determine when the 3 different DVD plans cost the same amount of money, if ever. Curriculum Essentials: A Journey

The purpose of this book is to acquaint the reader with what curriculum is, how it is defined, what is involved in the process of its development, the different types and models of curriculum, as well as innovations to make teaching and learning more engaging and meaningful. This will be balanced by the impact of assessment and adapting curriculum in times of challenges with an eye towards the work of great schools and master teachers during times of change.
The inclusion of Open Educational Resources (OER) provide a new and exciting dimension to the text through the inclusion of educational resources from experts who have graciously consented to share their work with others at no cost, thereby giving all readers the opportunity of learning about curriculum without the burden of cost as a barrier that shuts out capable and enthusiastic learners from gaining the knowledge and skills necessary in becoming thoughtful consumers and practitioners of curriculum.
Each chapter has a short introduction followed by essential questions that are designed to pique the reader’s interest, then by content that will reveal answers to the questions and enhance the reader’s curriculum knowledge base through interactive learning activities (ILA).

Founded in 2001, the Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (JoSoTL) is a forum for the dissemination of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in higher education for the community of teacher-scholars. Our peer reviewed Journal promotes SoTL investigations that are theory-based and supported by evidence. JoSoTL's objective is to publish articles that promote effective practices in teaching and learning and add to the knowledge base. The themes of the Journal reflect the breadth of interest in the pedagogy forum.

This lesson is a re-engagement lesson designed for learners to revisit a problem-solving task they have already experienced. Students will activate prior knowledge of graphical representations through the 'what's my rule' number talk; compare and contrast two different learners' interpretations of the growing pattern; use multiple representations to demonstrate how one of these learners would represent the numeric pattern; make connections between the different representations to more critically compare the two interpretations. Program Review Handbook: A Course-based Approach to Conducting Program Review
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted

The authors propose that a professional learning community is a novel and meaningful perspective from which to approach program review, particularly when the community is embedded within a reliable infrastructure such as a course.

The Program Review Course described in this Handbook follows an interdisciplinary cohort- and team-based model that is faculty-led. The course offers a reliable institutional framework for learning through formalized structures and nested support services. The course is housed in the office of quality assurance and coordinated and maintained by a quality assurance practitioner. All aspects of the course are available through a learning management system, such as Moodle. Program review teams are automatically enrolled in the course where they have access to timelines, templates, a discussion forum, and a program review handbook. During the 14-month course, faculty engage in a comprehensive review of their program and/or department. The course includes eight modules: 1) orientation, 2) curriculum mapping, 3) SOAR analysis activity, 4) surveys, 5) self-study report, 6) external review, 7) action planning, and 8) reporting results to the university community.

This team-based course is designed to evaluate program performance in relation to student success, curriculum content, program viability and impact, and the program’s contribution to the university’s mission and vision. Program performance is measured through a combination of self- and external peer- evaluation. Through evidence-based inquiry and analyses, findings are documented in a comprehensive report leading to an action plan and goals for program improvement over the next five to seven years.

This lesson is about properties of quadrilaterals and learning to investigate, formulate, conjecture, justify, and ultimately prove mathematical theorems. Students will: Analyze characteristics and properties of two- and three-dimensional geometric shapes; develop mathematical arguments about geometric relationships; and apply appropriate techniques, tools, and formulas to determine measurements.Explore relationships among classes of two- and three-dimensional geometric objects, make and test conjectures about them, and solve problems involving them. Employ forms of mathematical reasoning and proof appropriate to the solution of the problem at hand, including deductive and inductive reasoning, making and testing conjectures, and using counter examples and indirect proof. Identify, formulate and confirm conjectures. Establish the validity of geometric conjectures using deduction, prove theorems, and critique arguments made by others. (9th/10th Grade Math)
