Artists are often particularly keen observers and precise recorders of the physical conditions of the natural world. As a result, paintings can be good resources for learning about ecology. Teachers can use this lesson to examine with students the interrelationship of geography, natural resources, and climate and their effects on daily life. It also addresses the roles students can take in caring for the environment. Students will look at paintings that represent cool temperate, warm temperate, and tropical climates. In this lesson students will: Identify natural resources found in particular geographic areas; Discuss ways in which climate, natural resources, and geography affect daily life; Apply critical-thinking skills to consider the various choices artists have made in their representations of the natural world; Make personal connections to the theme by discussing ways they can be environmental stewards; Identify natural resources found in particular geographic areas; Discuss ways in which climate, natural resources, and geography affect daily life; Apply critical-thinking skills to consider the various choices artists have made in their representations of the natural world; Make personal connections to the theme by discussing ways they can be environmental stewards. This is an art lesson easily integrated by art specialists or classroom teachers into any thematic unit that involves space, the solar system, or science fiction and is adaptable for students in grades 2 through 6. It incorporates the use of art materials such as oil pastels and compasses and the design concepts of shape and balance in a composition as well as providing the students with a fun and creative way to explore areas of geometry and science. This lesson is especially useful for classroom teachers who are aware of how art, when integrated into the classroom curriculum, can help students with different learning styles explore a variety of subjects in a way that will help them maximize the learning experience. Atoms and Matter (K-2)

In this activity, learners explore atoms as the smallest building blocks of matter. With adult help, learners start by dividing play dough in half, over and over again. Then they use a notebook (a few small squares of paper with 2 staples along one edge) and start folding the pages in half. Magnets and play dough are used to model the proton and electron cloud of an atom, and two play dough hydrogen atoms are "bonded" together to form a molecule. Intermolecular bonds between water molecules in different phases, physical changes, and chemical changes in the kitchen are also introduced. This activity was designed as a kit that could be checked out of the library, but the kit is not required. (less)

This lesson integrates language arts, music, and math. The children will listen to the story "Count on Bunnies". They will be given the opportunity to act out the story and solve bunny equations. After listening to the song "Five Young Rabbits," the children will take turns being rabbits and pantomiming the actions as the class sings. The children will combine the rabbits at the end of each verse to see how many rabbits have been added. Then they will work in pairs to create their own rabbit equations. (less)

In this activity, students will learn some key information about a San Francisco native animal and then write a firsthand account of their experience from the perspective of that animal in the time before the explorers came to San Francisco. A series of prompts are provided to help guide their narrative. By thinking about San Francisco's natural history, learners may also discuss how animals have had to adapt to the changing environment over time. This lesson plan includes key vocabulary, background information, extension ideas, and is standards-based. (less)

The teaching ideas on this page have been found, refined, and developed by students in a college-level course on the teaching of biology at the elementary level. Unless otherwise noted, the lesson plans have been tried at least once by students from our partner schools. This wiki has been established to share ideas about teaching biology in elementary schools. The motivation behind the creation of this page is twofold: 1. to provide an outlet for the teaching ideas of a group of college educators participating in a workshop-style course; 2. to provide a space where anyone else interested in this topic can place their ideas.
