The user then can get a reading of the values of voltage and current of each element in the circuit by simply position the cursor over the element. A menu on the top left provides access to a wealth of pre-configured circuits as well an export feature to save your work. One is attached to a music source, such as a small radio or iPod, and the other is attached to an external speaker. The EJS Faraday Disk Dynamo shows a conducting disk that rotates in a magnetic field. This produces a current (homopolar generator) and for certain configurations, it is a self-exciting dynamo. A self-exciting dynamo is the mechanical analog of a proposed mechanism to produce the earth and sun's magnetic fields. You can modify this simulation if you have Ejs installed by right-clicking within the plot and selecting “Open Ejs Model” from the pop-up menu item. The Faraday Disk Dynamo model was created using the Easy Java Simulations (Ejs) modeling tool. It is distributed as a ready-to-run (compiled) Java archive. Double clicking the ejs_em_FaradayDiskDynamo.jar file will run the program if Java is installed. Ejs is a part of the Open Source Physics Project and is designed to make it easier to access, modify, and generate computer models. Additional Ejs models are available. They can be found by searching ComPADRE for Open Source Physics, OSP, or Ejs. (less)

Each of the visualizations was developed to supplement the MIT Physics 8.02 course in calculus-based Electricity and Magnetism. Topics for this section include 3-dimensional models of levitating and suspended rings, falling rings with and without resistance, and magnetic monopole/dipole above a conducting plane. This web site contains a complete suite of resources suitable for the second semester of an undergraduate electricity and magnetism class. The materials developed include a suite of clicker questions, in-class activities, homework problems, and other assessments. The topics covered include Maxwell's time-dependent equations, AC circuits, conservation laws, electromagnetic waves in vacuum and media, potentials and gauge transformations, radiation & special relativity. This package of course materials also contains implementation guides, an archive of several past E&M II courses at the University of Colorado, and supporting materials such as explicit learning goals, relevant education research articles, and notes on common student difficulties. The materials are available in Word, Powerpoint, and PDF formats to facilitate their adaptation and implementation by others. Assessment materials are available from the authors upon request. The authors of these materials are seeking feedback to help in the refinement and improvement of these course materials and assessments. (less)

We discuss an investigation exploring students' difficulties with equations involving resistance, capacitance and inductance. We find that introductory physics students have great difficulty understanding, e.g., how the resistance of an ohmic resistor can be written in terms of the potential difference across it and the current through it, but it does not change when the potential difference across the resistor is varied. Similar confusions arose in problems relating to capacitors and inductors. We discuss these difficulties with equations in the context of introductory physics students' performance on questions about circuit elements both in the free-response and multiple-choice formats.
