Beyond Weather and the Water Cycle is an online professional development magazine which focuses on preparing elementary teachers to teach climate science concepts while also integrating inquiry-based science and literacy instruction. The project draws on research showing that an integrated approach can improve student achievement in science, as well as in reading comprehension and oral and written discourse abilities. Through the Beyond Weather and Water Cycle project, we propose to increase elementary teachers’ understanding of climate and climate change, increase the amount and quality of science taught in elementary classrooms, and build a virtual professional learning community of practice around the teaching of climate and climate change. Traditional instruction on energy often presents forms of energy as a seemingly arbitrary list to be memorized, with little discussion of the meaning or purpose of these forms. Learners often struggle to make sense of these forms, and neither physicists nor physics educators are explicit about the criteria used to create these lists. This article presents our understanding of the meaning and purpose of forms, based on (1) our understanding of how physicists have used forms and (2) our observations of how elementary teachers create new forms and categorize existing forms in order to understand real-world problems. We propose that explicitly articulating the criteria used to identify forms of energy can empower teachers and students and help them to understand both the concept of energy and the nature of science. This study explores the tension between subject knowledge and pedagogic content knowledge in primary teacher education. It documents students and in-service teachers learning about forces within the context of floating and sinking. In doing so it describes not only significant features of the learning process itself but also examines subject specific aspects of learning, identifying some of the inherent difficulties for learners within this domain and demonstrating how learners construct links between tacit knowledge and abstract scientific notions. Implications for teacher education and the teaching of science in the classroom are explored. (less)

Although science educators have advocated that elementary teaching majors learn science concepts using inquiry-based methods, many college professors believe that these courses are merely “watered down” versions of traditional lecture-based courses. This study compared the chemistry content knowledge of elementary teaching majors enrolled in an inquiry-based course and science majors enrolled in traditional lecture-based courses. It also compared the elementary teaching majors' views of how science is taught and learned to the views of secondary science teaching majors. The elementary teaching majors developed chemistry content knowledge comparable to the students enrolled in the traditional lecture-based course, but they developed views regarding how science is taught and learned that were more in line with the constructivist ideals than the secondary science teaching majors. The elementary teaching majors also improved their interest and confidence in teaching science in the elementary school setting. These results suggest that both sets of teaching majors would benefit more from inquiry-based science courses than lecture-based courses. (less)
