This demonstration (on pages 9-11) uses gelatin and lead pellets to model how aerogel, a technology used by NASA spacecrafts, is used to capture comet particles. Instructions are provided on how to test the consistency of the gelatin "aerogel-lo", which must be prepared beforehand, and tips for running the demo. The procedure also includes background info about aerogel (first discovered in the 1930s), and limits of the "aerogel-lo" model, which is far more dense than real aerogel. Reflection questions are listed at the end. (less)

A miniature nighttime drama -- a bat capturing a flying insect -- unfolds, courtesy of Cynthia Moss and Kaushik Ghose, in a video diptych consisting of infrared imaging in the left panel and a schematic animated graph on the right. As the ghostly shape of the bat closes in on a flying mantis, the right-hand panel shows the track of predator and prey, and also pinpoints the direction of the bat's sonar (both action and sound have been slowed down by a factor of 16). In this activity, learn about predator-prey interactions by pretending to be generalist insect predators foraging for three prey species (candy). Three feeding adaptations are used (mandibles, raptorial forelegs, and unmodified legs). Students conduct several simulations, each of which lasts about a minute. After each simulation, prey reproduce and predator numbers are adjusted to reflect mortality and reproduction. One prey type becomes poisonous, and the predator-prey dynamics that result in stable populations of each predator and prey species are explored. A graphic representation of the results can be used to lead a discussion about the influence of evolutionary trade offs on ecological communities. (less)

Ziel dieses Tutorials ist es, den Leser mit den Grundlagen der Handschriftenkunde des Mittelalters vertraut zu machen und in kleinen, aufeinander aufbauenden Schritten zu erläutern, wie die Forschung mit Handschriften verändert und bereichert werden kann, sobald digitale Methoden zum Einsatz kommen. Der Weg einer Handschrift von der Bibliothek in das digitale Medium wird nachvollziehbar gemacht. Auch der technische Umgang mit Digitalisaten und beschreibenden Metadaten wird erklärt. Dem Tutorial liegen praktische Erfahrungswerte aus den Projekten "Virtuelles Skriptorium St. Matthias" (2010-2014) und "eCodicology" (2013-2016) zugrunde. Ersteres verfolgte die Zusammenführung, inhaltliche Aufbereitung und Präsentation eines mittelalterlichen Handschriftenbestandes; letzteres widmet sich der Frage, wie die Handschriftendigitalisate weiter verarbeitet werden können, um neue Daten aus den digitalen Bildern zu gewinnen und durch die Analyse dieser Daten neue Erkenntnisse über den Handschriftenbestand zu erlangen.
