This lesson plan is part of the DiscoverySchool.com lesson plan library for grades 6-8. Using research on environmental conditions of the prairie ecosystem (strong winds, hot and dry summers, cold winters, and plants and animals), students will design an imaginary animal, detailing how its physical and behavioral characteristics make it well adapted to the prairie. They will illustrate their animals and display them around the classroom with their written descriptions. Included are objectives, materials, procedures, discussion questions, evaluation ideas, suggested readings, and vocabulary. There are videos available to order which complement this lesson, an audio-enhanced vocabulary list, and links to teaching tools for making custom quizzes, worksheets, puzzles and lesson plans. In this outdoor, warm weather activity, learners use sweepnets to search a grassy area such as a large lawn or field, collecting small animals to find as many different kinds of animals as possible. Learners observe and try to identify the animals they catch and observe how different animals interact with each other. Because some animals can't be caught easily with sweepnets, the Branching Out part of the activity involves making very small "pitfall traps" in the ground. At the end of the activity, learners release all the animals back into the grassy area. (less)

In this classic activity, learners investigate natural selection by becoming birds foraging for food on an island. The prey (beans) vary in their coloration such that some blend into the environment better than others. The birds vary in the type of beak they have (plastic forks, spoons and knives). Each season, any prey that survives has a baby bean the same color as the parent. In addition, the most successful birds have a baby with the same beak trait while the least successful birds die. Over several generations, the bird and bean populations shift depending on the environment. (less)

This photograph compares the ventral wings of two individual butterflies of the same species (Bicyclus anynana) that matured during different seasons of the year. The wing on the left is produced during dry seasons, when hiding from predators is important. It has few eyespots and is more cryptic in coloring. The wing on the right is produced during wet seasons, and the eyespots serve as deflective targets for predator attacks during that time of year. Which phenotype is produced depends on the temperature at which a butterfly is reared. This photograph originally appeared on the cover of Ecology (84:7) in July 2003. (less)

This activity uses a model of the Virtual Ecosystem with three species in it: grass, rabbits, and hawks, enabling the students to explore the effect of predation on the prey population. At first students explore protective coloration as they 'become' a hawk and try to catch and eat brown and white rabbits on a snowy field. The latter blend into the background and are harder to see, so they have a selective advantage. Students then explore how the color of the rabbit population changes as the environment changes over time. (less)
