This page contains four interactive simulations on stellar astronomy. The first simulation, Stellar Parallax, shows how parallax varies with stellar distance. The second simulation, Eclipsing Binary Stars, simulates the light curve for a binary star system for different viewing angles. The third simulation, Binary Star System, illustrates the motion and result spectral signatures for a system of two orbiting starts. The final simulation, Stellar Evolution,shows the evolution of different mass stars on the H-R diagram from main sequence to the red giant phase. (less)

Eclipsing Binary Stars model simulates the detection of eclipsing binary stars. In this method, the light curve from the combination of the two stars, and how it changes over time due to each star transiting (or being occulted or eclipsing the other), is observed and then analyzed. In this simulation each star orbits the other in circular motion via Kepler's third law.  When one star passes in front of the other (transits), it blocks part of the starlight of the other star. This decrease in starlight is shown on the graph.  In the simulation the binary star system is shown as seen from Earth (edge on view) and from overhead, but magnified greatly, and with the star sizes not shown to the scale of the orbit. The mass, radius, and temperature of each star can be changed. The simulation uses either simple 3D or Java 3D (if installed) to render the view the stars. If Java 3D is not installed, the simulation defaults to simple 3D using Java. The Eclipsing Binary Stars model was created using the Easy Java Simulations (EJS) modeling tool. It is distributed as a ready-to-run (compiled) Java archive. Double clicking the ejs_astronomy_eclipsing_binaries.jar file will run the program if Java is installed. (less)

This simulation demonstrates how information about stars which can not be directly observed can be inferred from a special class of binary stars – eclipsing binaries. The simulation shows two stars orbiting each other. As one star is eclipsed the corresponding decrease in flux is displayed on a graph. The user can control the system orientation, stellar properties and the speed of the simulation. Instructor resources are available including student manuals, assessment materials, and a list of the assumptions used. This is part of a collection of astronomy applets. (less)

This Resource Letter is designed to guide students, educators, and researchers through (some of) the literature on black holes. We discuss both the physics and astrophysics of black holes. We emphasize breadth over depth, and review articles over primary sources. We include resources ranging from nontechnical discussions appropriate for broad audiences to technical reviews of current research. Topics addressed include classification of stationary solutions, perturbations and stability of black holes, numerical simulations, collisions, the production of gravity waves, black-hole thermodynamics and Hawking radiation, quantum treatments of black holes, black holes in both higher and lower dimensions, and connections to nuclear and condensed-matter physics. On the astronomical end, we also cover the physics of gas accretion onto black holes, relativistic jets, gravitationally redshifted emission lines, evidence for stellar-mass black holes in binary systems and supermassive black holes at the centers of galaxies, the quest for intermediate-mass black holes, the assembly and merging history of supermassive black holes through cosmic time, and their affects on the evolution of galaxies. This applet demonstrates how one can infer the diameters and temperature of stars by measuring the brightness variations seen in an eclipsing binary star system. The applet displays binary stars eclipsing each other. The user can control the photospheric temperature and radius of each star, as well as the orbital radius and inclination. The applet also allows the user to simulate the effect of noisy data by setting the random error of measurement as a fraction of the total brightness of both stars. The simulation will continue to calculate the system brightness, averaging its results with the previous trials. This is part of a larger collection of applets by STEM Colorado focused mostly on topics in astronomy. (less)
