Mutations are the grist of evolution, and have accumulated in our DNA over time. When populations separate, each group accumulates their own unique set of DNA mutations. Because mutations in a particular sequence of DNA occur at a constant rate, the number of accumulated mutations in that sequence is proportional to the length of time that two groups have been separated. The major adaptation of the hominid branch of our family tree was bipedalism, the ability to walk on two legs. This ability allowed our ancestors to cover long distances of open ground on foot, and freed their hands for making and using tools. Looking at the bones of our closest living ape relative can tell us something of the physical adaptations that enabled our ancestors to efficiently walk long distances. (less)

A person with beta-thalassemia carries a mutation in both copies of the HBB gene, completely halting production of the beta globin protein. Without beta globin, the important oxygen-carrying protein, hemoglobin, can not be made. Although oxygen can be carried by a less efficient form of hemoglobin, most of the affected red blood cells die. (less)

In this activity (posted on April 18, 2011), learners follow the steps to construct a zoetrope, a device that produces an illusion of action from a rapid succession of static pictures, using a 16" bike wheel. This is a scaled up version of the more common, hand-help mini zoetrope activity (see March 27, 2011 post "Zoetrope (mini)"). This resource includes instructions on how to build the device, suggestions on how to produce good 2D and 3D animations, and a video clip of paper strip animation in the bike wheel zoetrope. (less)
